Government should change its stance on the ethnic problem

“There is also a possibility that India would join the US in a joint policy to guard regional security with the fast growing economic power of China and its expansionist ideas which could lead to a serious change in thinking about the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka and its gross violation of human rights.”

(May 28, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) The keen mind of my taxi driver friend 'Chummie' seems to have a great perception of world affairs than the Sri Lankan elite who are more concerned with wining and dining in the traditional fun loving way of kaapalla beepalla jolly karapalla. I asked him if he knew the latest Moratuwa baila but he smiled coyly and said the tsunami and the arrival of an increasing number of "body bags" from the north had put paid to it. Now they are talking anti-war and are always saying -aparadey - meaning what a waste.

He said that the Moratuwaites are blaming the politicians who make money out of the war and want to perpetuate it, which makes the rich grow richer and the poor poorer. In other words the government is 'psychologically blinkered' because of religious interference in governance and the power of the sangha and the greed for corrupt money.

He said his daughter had gleaned from the internet the possibility of Bush changing his attitude towards the LTTE as they are 'freedom fighters' using the same terrorist tactics of the government and not involved in pointing the finger at Bush who created global terrorism and created the al Qaeda because of US involvement in Palestine and Afghanistan which is considered a religious war against Islam. Poor Bush is tied down by the Zionist Jews of the US and the greed for Middle East oil. The US is afraid to let Russia and France have a controlling influence in the Middle East oil which was one of the main reasons for invading Iraq.

Recently Bush has hardened his stance against Sri Lanka because of its involvement with Iran on the principle of "if you are my enemy's friend then you are my enemy too." On this basis it is possible that the US may change its attitude towards the LTTE. The US now considers Sri Lanka as a fascist, racist state for having 'terrorised' the Tamil minority who are the descendents of the people who existed in the island long before the 'arrival' of the Sinhalese and are also ancestors of the Sinhala people.

The 'eviction' of the Tamils recently by bussing thousands of them to the north confirms the desperate situation of the Tamil minority and proof that they are a separate nation that is suffering from a violation of human rights and human dignity.

Chummie looked a little worried about US involvement and a sense of guilt. He agreed that there has to be a change of heart like in Northern Ireland and he said "if Northern Ireland can do it so could we." "There you are," I said "you have already given a solution." After a moment's pause he said US involvement might force us to re-think our stand as otherwise in the long run it would be the Sinhalese who would sand to lose in a karmic sort of way.

There is also a possibility that India would join the US in a joint policy to guard regional security with the fast growing economic power of China and its expansionist ideas which could lead to a serious change in thinking about the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka and its gross violation of human rights.

The Sri Lanka ruling class should realise that they have to do something to prevent the triumph of evil for the sake of their future generations.
