Prabakaran paying his last respect to his colleague

(May 22, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Media unit of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) released photographs showing their leader Velupillai Prabakaran paying his last respect to the late Balasegaram Kandiah alias Brigadier Balraj an undisclosed hideout in Vanni.

Details of where and when Prabakaran, the leader of the LTTE paid his last respect to self styled Brigadier Balaraj who died of a heart attack on last 20 May in Vanni around 2.00pm at Kilinochchi Hospital, were not disclosed.

According to an official statement released by the LTTE, “May 21st, 22nd and 23rd are hereby declared as national days of mourning his passing away.”

Balraj (27 November, 1965), hails from Kokkuththoduvai in Mullaiththeevu district, has commanded the Charles Antony Brigade between 1991-1993 and between 1995-1997. He was an expert on different forms of warfare, including psychological operations, and deployed different tactics during the planning and the conduct of the operations.


Balraj, the LTTE’s Deputy Military Commander and second-in-command to Prabhakaran in military matters, was appointed a Special Commander for the Wanni region and entrusted with a special task and powers by the LTTE Supremo on second week of this year (2008).
