President spreading his tentacles in to private TV channels

(June 25, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) There is a Sinhala saying "Do not bring even a kitten that has still not opened its eyes, from the south." Why was this phrase coined? Because people from deep down south were thought to be dangerous and crafty people. They will do anything to achieve their goals. How true this saying is in the current scenario.

Most of the prominent Sinhala businessmen in Colombo are from the south who came with a few rupees in their pocket. Today they are big businessmen controlling the entire market.

Living proof of this is our good President Rajapakse. Remember how he tried to misuse tsunami funds, and when challenged by some newspapers, returned it, and got away with it?

How he baited Pirapaharan to get people of the north east to refrain from voting for the UNP during presidential election in 2005 is history.

He fooled Ranil into an alliance and baited 17 elephants to his side. How he got Pirapaharan's right-hand man Karuna out of the country by allegedly giving him a diplomatic passport and later got him into jail in London.

He also got Pirapaharan's killing-cousin Pillayan into his pocket and conducted the eastern polls to his advantage. Here, he fooled the Muslim people by giving false promises to Hizbullah.

How he started Mihin Lanka to his personal advantage for taking his henchmen on joy rides to foreign lands and wasted people's money is well known. He broke the JVP into pieces. The list can go on and on wasting valuable space of your newspaper.

While bashing all opposition politicians, journalists and media institutions that criticise his regime and their antics - similar to the time of the French Revolution - he is in the process of acquiring private TV stations now.

He has encroached into one station by offering the chairmanship of Lake House to a popular figure conducting a programme there. Last week he spread his tentacles to TNL belonging to Ranil's brother by offering Hudson who conducts a morning programme a top post in the government controlled Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.

Now Sirasa / MTV has to be very careful - for we don't know what he will offer their workers to get them to revolt. He has already allocated broadcasting of Bana on Poya Days to Sirasa, overlooking SLBC/ ITN.

Hudson is now advocating on his programme a collaboration between the President and Opposition Leader to win the final war - which is an attempt to put a spoke in Ranil's opposition UNP which is gathering momentum.

Any rational thinking person who knows at least a little about the history of the world, will know that nowhere in the world has any government won a battle against a terrorist outfit by conventional war and indiscriminate bombing of its citizens.

Recently an LTTE wing claimed that they were responsible for all bombs that killed civilians in Colombo and its suburbs, and that these were done in retaliation for the civilians killings by the armed forces in the north on the pretext of bombing LTTE targets and that these will continue if the armed forces continue with civilian killings in the north.

On the morning of Sunday, June 15 Shan Wickremesinghe on the 'Hudson Show' was reading a newspaper item of how the thuggish brat of Minister Keheliya broke into the office of a teacher at the prestigious Royal College to rob some files containing incriminating evidence of some misdeeds of this brat.

Normally Hudson would cherish these news items for he can poke fun or throw insults on the parties involved in his foul language, using derogatory words such as aru, moo, ooi, buruwa, haraka, gona, thopi etc. But in this instance he said in a hush-hush voice: "Lamayin ge deval api katha koranna narakai ne" (it is not good to discuss children's matters) and closed the issue. Ane Hudson! Api nodanna live!

God save TNL! It will soon become another Rupavahini if this man continues to white wash the ruling party.
