Govt. has put the country in an irredeemable debt trap - Ravi Karunanayake

“Ports Authority has sustained a loss of Rs. 2700 million; Railways Dept. has lost Rs. 4297 million; Ceylon Transport Dept. (CTB) – Rs. 3745 million; Ceylon Electricity Board –Rs. 2100 million every month; Mihin Air – Rs.3600 million! - Whose money is this Govt. playing ducks and drakes with?”

(July 04, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) UNP Colombo Organiser and M.P. Ravi Karunanayake, speaking to the Media today (4Jul) at the UNP Media unit, said, the Govt. is not only robbing people (by ruthless taxation, price and tariff hikes) to pay for its sins, but is borrowing from all and sundry (Local and Foreign Banks) at exorbitant interest rates in desperation, but pretending to develop the country. The HSBC loan of Rs. 5000 million was borrowed at high interest rates recently stating it was for development programs. But, where are the development programs and the monies gone? He questioned.

Karunanayake gave details of the losses incurred by Govt. Institutions resulting from mismanagement, corruption and fiscal bungling:

Ports Authority has sustained a loss of Rs. 2700 million; Railways Dept. has lost Rs. 4297 million; Ceylon Transport Dept. (CTB) – Rs. 3745 million; Ceylon Electricity Board –Rs. 2100 million every month; Mihin Air – Rs.3600 million! - Whose money is this Govt. playing ducks and drakes with? He asked. On top of all this the Govt.’s economic wizard, Dr Cabraal says gleefully, country’s economy is on a shaky platform. What are they appointed for, if they are to continually make such utterances without finding solutions to relieve the people of the burdens?

After increasing the train fares by 400 % only a month ago, the Govt. now says that increase is not enough. This is same the Govt., by its Mahinda Chintana promised to bring down travel fares by 15 %!

Sri Lanka has created a record by being described as the country with the worst inflation currently, in the region. This was stated in the report of the HSBC Bank, the very Bank which lent Rs. 5000 million to the Govt.!

While urging the Media to expose the facts without fear or favour, Karunanyake said, this is their duty towards the Nation as Journalists. This is the time the Journalists should rally round the UNP when the Media is under unprecedented open harassment and when the Govt. is distorting facts openly, concealing from the people the truth.
