JVP & D.A. Rajapaksa Foundation (UK) Boycott Mass Demo Against Terrorism

(August 04, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) It is reliably learnt that the mass protest oraganised by the SL-AT (SRI LANKAN'S AGAINST TERRORISM) outside the Prime Ministers residence in Downing Street on Sunday 27th July was boycotted by the JVP party and members of the D.A. Rajapakse Foundation UK.

The mass protest was attended by hundreds of Sinhalese, Muslim and Tamil Sri Lankans from the Diaspora living in the United Kingdom including Sri Lankans from the “Norwegians Against Terrorism” (NAT) group.

The JVP party made desperate attempts to sabotage the whole event by unreasonably making demands to have the protest organized under their party banner and to make changes to the agenda of the protest and message to the UK government.

The D.A. Rajapakse Foundation (UK) and its President Mrs. Nanda Karunanayake and colleagues too boycotted the protest as they felt that they were not being given enough publicity by the SL-AT (SRI LANKAN'S AGAINST TERRORISM) and for those reasons failed to show their support along with hundreds of other patriotic Sri Lankans who participated in the event.

SL-AT was supported by the SLFP party and members of other Sri Lankan organizations. The only Sri Lankan Tamil political party to support the protest was EROS, whose Senior Leader and spokesman, Nesan Shankar Raji gave a speech at the event in support of the SL-AT and the protest by united patriotic Sri Lankans highlighting the need to wipe out terrorism in Sri Lanka and weaken the LTTE militarily in order to restore peace and democracy in the North-East.

The JVP party and the D.A. Rajapakse Foundation (UK) tried desperately to sabotage the protest and sling mud at the organizers through slander. It is said that the leader of the JVP was dead against the SL-AT organising the protest in London and had instructed the UK branch members to stay away from the protest. However a large number of JVP members disobeyed the JVP leaders instructions and participated at the protest amongst hundreds of other Sri Lankan brethren.

Members from the "Campaign for Peace & Unity in Sri Lanka" (CPUSL) too did not attend the protest apart from only three (CPUSL) committee members which included Nesan Shankar Raji of EROS, and a member from the JHU.

It is said that a section of the CPUSL committee members are more aligned to the JVP and the UNP parties and for those reasons they decided to boycott the protest. It is well known that the UNP party works in partnership with pro-LTTE political parties including its UK branch.

The protest organised by the SL-AT (SRI LANKAN'S AGAINST TERRORISM) had nothing to do with a political agenda or to support a particular political party in Sri Lanka. This protest was organized by peace loving Sri Lankans who are opposed to Terrorism in their motherland, and nothing more.
