Paying a price for misdeeds!

- The Sudar Oli Editorial

(August 08, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Late Mr.Maheswaren, Colombo District UNP Parliamentarian, addressing the Parliament once cautioned the law enforcement officials, that they would have to account for, if there was connivance, if any, with acts of violence such as abductions, extra judicial killings and the demanding of ransom. He cautioned that they would be held responsible for being indifferent in the discharge of their duties due to pressures exerted on them. He indirectly hinted that a successive government would not hesitate to take them to task.

Maheswaren pointed out these officials, who aid or fail to take action against such acts of violence unleashed on the innocent will be held responsible and dealt with even after retirement. One does not know whether the roar of Maheswaren, who reflected Tamil nationalism and fought within and out of Parliament for the cause of Tamil people, was silenced for his forthright views.

Recently, the Supreme Court issued a warning to such officials who connive with those in power to commit atrocities. The Supreme Court has pointed out that such officials cannot escape from the process of law. One example is that the Supreme court has fined Jayasundara, the Treasury Secretary, for his conduct.

This reminds us of Maheswaren, who expressed caution that officials will have to pay for their misdeeds one day!
