Gota inaugurates Defence Services sports meet




(September 22, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Much-awaited sports event in the year for defence services, the Defence Services Sports Meet was inaugurated this morning (22) at Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo on a grand scale.


Mr Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence as Chief Guest officially declared the Sports Meet open amidst reverberation of Magul Bera as all sportsmen of the tri-services lined up.

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Air Chief Marshal Donald Perera, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda and Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Roshan Goonetileke graced the inauguration as special invitees. A representative gathering of tri-service senior officers attended the opening.

As recital of National Anthem and the subsequent observance of two-minute silence in honour of fallen War Heroes culminated, tri-service sportsmen presented a colorful display before the Olympic Torch was lit amidst fanfare of the band.

Sportsmen and sportswomen representing the Army, Navy and Air Force afterwards took the oath assuring proper play and conduct until the end of the Sports Meet on Friday (26).

The opening spectacle saw para-jumping and sky diving displays, band and cultural displays which attracted the attention of the visitors to the occasion.

Among those athletes are many who had earlier obtained laurels at national and international levels including the Asian Games and the Olympics.
