Wanni Tigers plan massive fast unto death against the government

“The LTTE is certainly capitalizing on this otherwise the ethnic issue would have been resolved long ago. The major cause of this failure has to be placed at the doors of the government. Their lack of vision and the failure to accept that every citizen’s fundamental rights have to be equal has helped terrorism to become such a destructive force in Sri Lanka.”

(September 20, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Certain sources close to the LTTE reveal a deadly plan the Wanni terrorists are hatching to trap the people of this region into a major fast unto death demonstration virtually at gun point. This appears to be an immediate reaction to the orders of the government for all non-governmental persons to leave the area.

Thursday September 18 all humanitarian and other NGOs with the exception of the ICRC pulled out of the Wanni region following the directive of the government.

This appears to be clever ruse not only to draw the attention of the international community but more particularly India to embarrass her with possible repercussions in South India from some of the minor political parties there who are supportive of the LTTE.

There was that earlier incident when Thileepan demonstrated in a similar away against Indian intervention in the Eelam War. When he began his fast Thileepan was already a sick man and when he died he was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lt. Colonel on the orders of the Tiger supremo, V Prabhakaran. There were speculations at that time the Tiger leader preferred a dead Thileepan to make much headway for his movement when he could have prevented his death.

This time, it is learnt, women and children in large numbers will be forced to demonstrate in this deadly strategy and Prabhakaran will react with no compassion, the way he handled Thileepan’s fate. This is very similar to cult suicides where people en masse are sacrificed in the name of some weird cause but the only exception here will be that Prabhakaran will not take the cyanide.

The sources suggest that Prabhakaran’s volunteers are already looking for the kind of people who will draw the greatest sympathy from the international community like young pregnant women, and children and the old while he will use the strong and sturdy ones as frontline fodder.

However the International Community is also under a dilemma because there are grave doubts about the government’s intentions and whether they are really concerned about resolving the ethnic crisis. This has strengthened the support for the LTTE as the only force that can stand up to the government on this issue.

Especially some International agencies have blamed to the Government about its discriminatory attitudes towards the Tamil minority. This has remained like a terrible sore for many years now. There may also be more eviction of Tamils from the Colombo District and racial bigots are still calling the tune in respect of the ethnic issue.

A political expert in Colombo told the Sri Lanka Guardian this problem or rather the failure of the government to resolve the ethnic crisis is creating problems for the government in the war against the Tiger terrorists.

The LTTE is certainly capitalizing on this otherwise the ethnic issue would have been resolved long ago. The major cause of this failure has to be placed at the doors of the government. Their lack of vision and the failure to accept that every citizen’s fundamental rights have to be equal has helped terrorism to become such a destructive force in Sri Lanka.

This has now affected the entire country.
