28 PEOPLE INCLUDING JOURNALIST HAVE BEEN KILLED

80 PEOPLE WERE ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL

(October 06, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka Guardian) At least 28 people including a prominent military officer and opposition leader of North Central Province Maj. Gen.Janaka Perera, his wife Wajira Perera, Dr. John Pulle and his wife have been killed in the blast. Also injured were several people in a suicide explosion in Anuradhapura today (Oct. 6) morning, reported a Sri Lanka Guardian correspondent in Anuradhapura.

According to available information the blast had occurred near the old bus stand. The explosion occurred during the ceremonial opening of new United National Party (UNP) office in Anuradhapura.

According to the latest reports 80 wounded people were admitted to the Anuradhapura Hospital “ Dr. Sarath Weerabanda, director of the Anuradhapura Hospital told the Sri Lanka Guardian. Also killed in the blast was a journalist who worked for Sirasa News media.

Meanwhile, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told a news conference that the government should take the responsibility of the deaths. He blamed the government for failure to provide adequate security to the former military officer.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Jayantha Gamage accompanied by the Government Analyst have been flown to Anuradhapura to carry out investigations.

Maj Gen Perera who was educated at St Joseph's College joined the army in 1966 and served in the army for 34 years. He retired in 2001 and was posted as Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to Australia and later as the Ambassador in Indonesia. - Sri Lanka Guardian
