Nudist Colony

by Roy Ratnavel

(February 11, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) In the outset, I like to say that there is no denying Tigers have lost significant ground and they are against considerable odds. But to say that Tigers are done forever is bit presumptuous to say the least.

At the risk of sounding like a cockeyed optimist or a romantic fool, I am compelled to respond the article regarding Sri Lankan assault on Tamil heartland [Sri Lanka Closes in on Tamil Tiger Rebels, February 7, 2009]. While it highlighted some interesting and important points, I like to draw attention to the following statement – “The pocket of land they are now boxed in to, by some accounts as small as 30 square miles, is a sandy area with limited vegetation and few places to hide.” Contrary to this claim, as someone who is very familiar with this region, I can assure you that there are numerous jungle hideouts and hostile population for Tamil Tigers to wage war for a long time to come.

Against this backdrop, more than ever, I am now convinced that many journalists have never been to current battle zone – as its also well known that government is not allowing anyone there – but managed to give certainty to 'End of Tigers' outcome after reading Sri Lanka's own press clippings without actually knowing the ground reality.

Simple rule of thumb: When you're not let in, it’s a sign that there’s something they want to hide. Although shot by a different Director and played by different actors, we are seeing the same movie for the fourth time – but, I am afraid the end will be the same.

This is where the cockeyed optimist part of the argument comes in: Except for taking pictures of carefully evacuated Tiger towns and bunkers, so far Sri Lanka is yet show any substantial evidence to support its monumental claims to its punch drunk citizens and naïve Western audiences. Before the war, Sri Lanka claimed that there were 30,000 Tigers. Recently Sri Lankan defense ministry stated that there are only 1,000 Tigers left to fight. A quick, back of the napkin calculation tells me that means 29,000 bodies are missing. This means either I am stupid, or Sri Lanka should be incredibly proud of its magician like morticians. Moreover, where are the Tiger fleet of seagoing naval vessels, heavy artilleries, tanks and more importantly – the planes? As far as I can remember, the Tiger Chief was accused of many things, but no one ever accused him of being an illusionist like David Copperfield.

Here, perhaps is the romantic fool part: Tiger crouches, only to pounce later as the old Tamil saying goes. Col. Hariharan will certainly attest to this as his ‘Indian army’ once received a bloody nose from barrage of Tiger mauling during the period of 1987 to 1990. From his bile statements these days, I suspect that the wound still hasn’t healed yet. 1995 was eerily sounds the same when Tigers were driven out of Jaffna and similar eulogies were written. Since then many Sri Lankan Presidents, Defense Ministers and Military commanders have come and gone, and some are sadly not alive today to share their much-needed experience.

Human history shows that the winners of wars are those who sound their belief or barbaric yawps over the rooftops of the world, while the losers are the ones who cannot express themselves without apology. It is clear that the West so badly wants to be on the roof, thump its chest and bask in glory so it can for once and for all end it’s scoreless streak in the ‘war on terror’ game, and such looking for a humiliating, Saddam Hussein end to Tamil freedom struggle.

At this juncture I am reminded of another Tamil proverb: Even when faced with hunger, a Tiger will never eat grass. I reckon it will more likely to be a Tiger out of its den as suppose to spider hole with a bearded disgraced leader. Recent Sri Lankan military debacle in Puthukkudiyiruppu (PTK) – which was well hidden by Sri Lanka from the world, is one such example which resulted in the loss of more than one thousand Sri Lankan soldiers. Box them up, and then cut them down strategy is in full motion [http://www.tamilnet.com/art.html?catid=13&artid=28326].

Any war is supposed to be a lesson. If it does not teach people anything, it means that the battles of that war were wasted as well as those people’s lives, who died in the battles. I think there are two lessons here.

First, Tamil freedom struggle is a serious matter – not a jihad against infidels. Tamils know from past experience that one sure way to make your life a series of defeats, miseries, and firings, is to constantly back away from even your most passionately held beliefs. To that end, Tamil Eelam also floated a "Four Ds" plan – Defense, Determination, Dedication and Defiance.

Second, Sri Lanka is ruled by some nasty people – evil incarnates knowingly preside over the death and destruction of innocent Tamils. The realization of the fact that most industrially developed countries of the world, which has many high-tech weapons at their disposal, committed an insane action; when they agreed to donate their advanced weapons to an aggressive, dangerous, uncontrollable and genocidal government. Tamils hope hell has particularly spiky barstools reserved for such tyrants.

If it weren't so serious and tragic, it might be amusing that since the beginning of its independence from the British in 1948, the ‘Hawkish’ leaders of Sri Lanka who ran the country made a disastrous mess from which no easy escape beckons. In the absence of overwhelming and fundamental political change there, peace will never be possible. Unless, and until Sri Lanka can produce leaders who can realize that truth, and are willing to act on it, it will continue to be dismembered by conflict, long after the Tamil Tigers have passed into history. Sadly, something tells me that we will be having this conversation for another 30-year.

Political opponents, insufficiently loyal followers, independent journalists and people of wrong ethnic background have a habit of winding up dead, imprisoned or in exile from this 'Democratic' Sri Lanka. Against this backdrop, other than the brainwashed or the brain-dead, it is hard these days to find any sane person who feels recent Sri Lankan military advancement is a matter for rejoicing.

Journalists are amazing people. They think can guess and even predict the outcome of a war even before the facts are in. I do see a big difference, however, between Hollywood type articles and that of Sri Lankan fakery. The concern I have for the particular manipulation of latter kind is the unimaginable carnage it levied on innocent Tamils. There are other people too that are even more amazing than journalists – they are Sri Lankan thug politicians masquerading as defenders of democracy and eradicators of terror, but they hardly ever tell the truth.

Warren Buffet – smartest investment mind of our time once lamented: “Only when the tide goes out, you will know who is swimming naked.” History has shown Tamils over and over again that the Sri Lankan capital is a nudist colony.

Obviously Ratnavel is brainwashed by LTTE like many other tamils. and can't think balanced. He is correct in the analsys about the previous regimes' inaction to prevent tamil terrorism. The root cause of mistrust between ethnic groups occurred because some pre-independance Sri Lanka tamils agitated for a 50-50 sharing of the country when the ethnic proportion was 72-18% in favour of Sinhala. Besides scores of Tamil Naduans entered Sri Lanka illegaly and spread out far south as Matara. These and northern tamils were loyal towards India than Sri Lanka. Indian tamil nationalist actor/politician MGR held his party AGM in Jaffna long before the tamil terrorism appeared. Tamils in general and were therefore thought as possible new invaders. They have been fighting the sinhalese from time to time in the past centuries. It is correct to assume that LTTE had planned the withdrawal of forces to PKD area expecting army advaces. However after six rounds of peace talks, only to rearm, LTTE now does not entertain the support they enjoyed world wide in the past.Hence there is no chance of re-bounce. Hiding behind a civilian shield has also been a part of the plan. That's the cause of the delay in finishing the LTTE and not the superiority of the LTTE as Ratnavel believes. All those hidden guns will then appear as has been the case in the last two days.

Save Sri Lanka now! said...

Sri Lanka is already a nudist colony. It has nothing to be prod of since its so called independence. It has failed to progress as a country when once it was leading over Singapore. Now, it is selling all its wealth and making future generations to be indebted. When and if the current recession turns into depression, Sri Lanka will be permanently be a failed state, never to able to recover.

Yes, Author precisely said. This war never will end. Sihalease been fool by current Sri Lankan government. LTTE is not working for money. Sri Lanka goverment lost 3000 to 5000 soldiers and 5000 to 8000 injured. LTTE will retake all the place they lost within 2 to 3 months.

Such a well-analysed article! It is evident that Mr.Ratnavel has written this with such a good knowledge of the background/history of the issue in Srilanka. Tamils' struggle will never end till they achieve the self-determination status in Eelam, their homeland since it ever existed. There should never be space for the talk of majority & minority here but space for democracy & freedom for all. only when such state is reached, the struggle by the tamils will come to an end. With such a government that does not treat its citizens as human beings it is never attainable. The srilankan gov't first needs to open its doors free for journalists. But it will not happen as this will bring their barbaric actions to the world more easily. But cannot hide the truth for long. can they?

I dont think Ratnavel is brain-washed by LTTE, as he correctly said whats happening there...
We guys are getting to know whts happening there from the army spoke persons only since there is no one there in the war zone nor journalyst are not allowed/cant speak the truth, no international parties are allowed.
My question is why dont the GoSL allow meadia's, journalysts, international communities in the war zone to see wht is happening?? Why do they have to kill the journalyst or whoever bring the truth??
From my point of view is that, this GoSL isn't ready to tell the truth to the people as they are getting badly badly very badly beaten by the ltte or something fishy otherwise they would allow them.

with Regards to the civilians, I think the civilians must be taken care by international communities like Red cross/ic

See the comments below someone wrote this:

-The defence secretry GottaBaya said that the PDK hospital is also a target - how professionalism is this?
-some politicians in SL said - people who are living in Vanni - they all are tigers and they all have to be targeted!! - how fair is this..
-Sarath Phonseka said - this country is not united country and its the only for the bhudist country--sinhalese are the real owners, so the tamils dont need to ask for a separate state-- they can be in this country as a refuge...and these guys Rajapaksa/gotapaya/pasil Government or anyother politicians ain't denied the statement of Sarath. how fair is this??? this means they all are agreeing what Sarath Fonseka said.. How honestworthy is this?? we didnt show up the right way on this!!
if you guys continue to do this way then how the tamil souls will be happy/trust with whatever you do/say??? How they gonna united with you/us?? if this continued to happen then we cannot blamed the tamils activities even if it worst, we cant blamed them for as they will be fighting for their own right ever...rather we should be blamed for!! we should correct ourself..we need to move onto the new modern 21st century and make up our own mind to be thinking in a new useful/peaceful/joyable way... Our country is belong to us - Bhudist/Hindu/Christians/Muslims all with equal right)...Even now the guys who are in the politics and the army chief - they all have hatred racism bhudism mind...they have mixed the poison in our relatives/peoples brain in the form of Bhudism...and henceforth sinhalese souls brain is with racism as a nutriton/vitamins..

The money we(this GoSL or Previous) spent on this war is ..indefinete number rupees - much more…., If we could spent them on the following then we would be in .....
- guide with the purely mind
- bring the truth and to learnt the innocent people
- have the good knowledge with the united nation..
- develop our country,
- lessing down the cost of living,
- help poor people to develop their lifestyle,
- taking the stephs to decresing the number of unemployment
- develop the young guys skills, to build up with educated with electrical/computing stuff to improove their lifestyle/carrier
- to boost their carrier path
- make the individual family/person (no matter if sinhalese/tamils/muslims - all to be considered) to be educated in every corner of the village/towns of our country
- save our country from the credit crunch
- many more….this is what i can think of now..

If the tamils wanted a seperate state called Tamil -eealam, then thats fine..its upto their decision and GoSL have to admit it.. we have seen many of the tamils are wanting seperate state- eealm...protests are proving.. even in UK - about 150,000 people, and many hundredths of thousands of people were attending the protests around the world to support the LTTE and the Ealams..This is proofing...

I think the permanent solution will be seperate state , and by doing this we could achieve the above... Guys remember that this war will never come to an end rather this will toll the number of loss of civilians death/wound, property loss, money, it will also lead to this country as a totally waste and this GoSL is very well doing this to prove that they taking our country to the hell.
