Solheim regrets the rejection of the peace initiative

Special Report by Udara Soysa from Atlanta and Nilantha Ilangamuwa from New Delhi

(February 05, New Delhi, Sri Lanka Guardian) Erik Solheim, the Norwegian government minister quite familiar to Sri Lanka was sorry that the initiative from the U.S., EU, Japan and Norway for the immediate stop of the war actions on Sri Lanka was not positively. Speaking from New Delhi on the phone where he attending a conference on the environment and climate crisis, he said:

“I am very sorry the situation in Sri Lanka has become so extreme. It is a bloodbath in which tens or hundreds are killed every day, and it goes from bad to worse.”

“Our statement,” he said, “is an attempt to stop the civilian population's suffering, "said Erik Solheim. He was reacting to the criticism of the initiative and also the personal criticism leveled against him. Mr Solheim became quite a controversy in Sri Lanka how he handled the Norwegian involvement and his perceived partiality towards the LTTE.

However, Tamil representatives in Norway say they feel "betrayed" by Solheim, and the government of Sri Lanka said Thursday, the proposal from the three countries and the EU as "foolish."

“We have not received any feedback from the LTTE, but the reactions of the other shows how the situation is irreconcilable,"said Solheim. He is expected to discuss the situation in Sri Lanka with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and India's National Security Adviser Shri MK Narayanan in New Delhi today.

In the statement Tuesday the United States, EU, Japan and Norway urged the separatist LTTE to lay down their arms, accept government offers of amnesty and negotiate with the government about the conditions for a surrender. The four also said that the LTTE should aim to become a political party.

At the same time they urged the government Monday in Colombo to respect international law and human rights in the treatment of civilians and prisoners and that UN, Red Cross and international humanitarian organizations must have full and unimpeded access to the camps where Tamil refugees eventually held.

Red Cross said Thursday that the situation for the sick and wounded is really bade. 300 patients and health professionals had to flee from a hospital that has been under attack for several days, according to Jan Egil Mosand, Red Cross disaster coordinator. Eighteen Red Cross employees had to escort them to flee to a local center in Puttumatalan area on the coast. This area lacks clean drinking water, which makes the situation even worse.

But the government of Sri Lanka rejects the call to start negotiations with the insurgent group LTTE, according to a Sri Lankan newspaper. “Nothing could be more foolish than this, " said Gotabhaya Rajapakse, Secretary of the Sri Lankan Defense Ministry and President Rajapakse’s younger brother, to The Island newspaper. “Nothing other than unconditional surrender can lead to an end on the offensive.”

He called the initiative from Norway, Japan, USA and the EU "an overtly attempt to save the Tigers," and also rejects the suggestion that the Tamil Tigers in the future may participate in the Sri Lankan political life as a political party. “The world community should not wait for the Sri Lankan government to allow the LTTE to participate as a political party in a new consultation after the armed forces have broken their ability to wage war, "said the president's brother.

Tamil Tigers at a low level can be "refurbished," he says. But leaders, according to him including chief Velupillai Prabhakaran should be brought to justice.

The situation was irreconcilable for last 26 years. GOSL made many attempts to bring LTTE to a negotiated settlement based on the idea of the United Sri Lanka. LTTE repeatedly refuse the offers and insist on carving out the island for the so called ELAM. Solheim was one of the people who supported the idea. According to a Somali women who lived in Norway, whom I met in USA told me the Tamil people in Norway treat Solhim like a god. Also she mentioned to me how much he enjoys this royal treatment from this brown skin people from the third world. If Norway spent all that money to develop the country and provide skills and jobs for people they had a better chance to help Sri Lanka. But Norway took the wrong turn due to their lack of understanding of the problem and the LTTE leadership. They fed the terrorist in Sri Lanka. The Norwegians who went to the talks with the LTTE was easily hoodwinked by the LTTE through Royal treatments. They were gullible, perhaps they may have their own agenda, and otherwise there is no reason for the Norwegians to be so attached to such a heinous terrorist group.

Solheim was waiting all these days not knowing what to do. Perhaps he thought that his friend the "Sun God" would stage a spectacular come back. Now that is seems very unlikely, he is coming out to find a way extract Prabha out of the mess he is in. Yes, Solheim has top repay all the lobsters and crab he ate as Prabha's guest. He even took his 10 year old son once to introduce to the 'future leader of Tamil Ealam" ! Guy is not worth talking about. He is an opportunist looking at the Noble price from one eye. He is the one who tried to impose a laughable ISGA, giving LTTE the path to achieve Ealam legally. For her intelligence, Chandrika, was clever enough to realise it and dissolve the parliament. If not we would already have Ealam with Prabhakaran as the president and Solheim as a honorary citizen!

My dear Erick Solheim, the round the bush game is now over. We Sinhalese people knew your intervention in our country was not with clear intention to resolve the conflicts we had and under no circumstances that you and your country were not on a peace mission but to help your own pocket. Now you have split the beans (your plate of lobster from Prabhakaran and exchange of a Prabhakaran's TV against a house in Norway to you) has to open the eyes of EU, US and the rest of the world. Solheim, for God sake get your act togeter and do some good deads or do nothing at all. You will rot in hell for you have done. Our curses are with you.
