Student pleads guilty for killing another

(April 07, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian)The Colombo High Court today sentenced a Sri Jayawardenapura University student who pleaded guilty to stabbing another student to death and injuring another.

He pleaded guilty for the death of Sampath Wimalathissa Bandara on June 4, 2005 during a clash between two student factions of the university.

The accused also pleaded guilty for the charge of stabbing and injuring another student.

Accordingly, the accused was convicted of causing the death of a student during a brawl and was sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment suspended for five years.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 and ordered the accused to pay the relatives of the victim Rs. 450,000 as compensation.

After being found guilty of the second charge of stabbing and wounding another student, the court sentenced the accused to a one year term of rigorous imprisonment and suspended it for five years.

Colombo High Court Judge Kumuduni aWiskremasinghe imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 and ordered the accused to pay Rs. 50,000 as compensation to the injured student.
