The British making the World unliveable

By Helasingha Bandara

(May 16, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Throughout modern history Britain has created everlasting conflicts, just for their survival, in the so called developing regions of the world, particularly in Asia and Africa. A monumental example is the creation of rivalry, animosity and the hatred between India and Pakistan. It is a unanimous view of the Asians and the Africans that Britain has contributed to make the world a chaotic an unliveable place more than any other nation. They continue to do so. The invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan are recent examples. The British are again about to make a similar blunder by interfering in the Sri Lanka war against terrorism in the guise of saving Tamil civilians, influenced by the sleaziest member of the British Parliament Keith Vaz. The British media has exposed Keith vaz’s sleazy deals many a times that his integrity is in tatters if he had any at all to begin with. Read “Britain warns Sri Lankan government- BBC Sinhala, 15 May 2009”.

Why Britain and America are hated world over? The arrogance and the double standard are the predominant causes. When they invaded Iraq on the excuse of finding non-existing weapons of mass destruction they did not listen to the views of the international community. When they continue to kill civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan they call it collateral damage. When they confront Taliban they do not propose to send a peace keeping force to rescue civilians or they do not stop firing just because the Taliban are moving amidst the civilians. They can do it because they have the power and the influence. Power and influence do not prevent them from being subjected to hatred by others. This hatred of the powerless and the non-influential people is making the world a paradise of suicide bombers, thanks to the innovations of Tamil tigers.

The concern for human lives is an honourable feeling and it should be respected. To be duped by the Tamil Tiger propaganda is another matter and cannot be respected. How come the UN always relies on Tamils as officials to deal with the Sri Lanka issue? Kumaraswamys, Nambiars, Pillays are all Tamils. Can we expect unbiased opinion from them? Britain should not force itself into Sri Lanka without finding the truth. The concern about the Tamil vote which is a considerable strength in Britain now may mislead the British MPs on the Sri Lanka terrorism issue and the temptation to appease the influential Tamils may lead Britain to rash action without following proper procedures.

On the part of the government of Sri Lanka it has done a great job of bringing the terrorist down on their keens to beg intervention of India and the West. Yet as many people have pointed out in the past the Government has solely concentrated on the war front without giving due consideration for publicity, propaganda or media involvement. Therefore Tamil terrorists are about to win again. The government should understand that if there is nothing to hide then to let the world see what happens. Make facilities for the Sri Lankans within the country to read what the world says. There are very many people who are capable of countering the bogus arguments and supporting the government only if they know what is said and done and only if they are facilitated to express their views. Keep the incapable ambassadors if the government does not want to change them. Yet employ those who can speak the local languages properly and know the local culture well to handle the media. For example the ability to Speak English the way Sri Lankans do within the country would not help handling John Snow’s questions. The Sri Lankan representative should not only speak good English but should have experience of living in Britain for a considerable length of time and should have experience of working with high level local officials. This goes for the other countries too.
