Country heading for an economic disaster -UNP

(May 13, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Speaking to the media at the UNP media unit today, (13 May), UNP M.P. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam warned the people to brace themselves for the worst economic sufferings; hardships which will devastate the country worse than that wrought by the Tsunami. This situation has been created by none other than the Government itself, he added.

The Government has only one objective – to perpetuate its power craze . Because of this obsession , it is holding elections right round the year and winning by foul rather than by fair means . Then again , it has to feed and fatten its Jumbo Cabinet of 110 Ministers . These Ministers are enjoying all the benefits and perks at the expense of the people.

Instead of the Govt. taxing and taxing the people , why cant it make its Ministers to make some sacrifices at this hour of country’s economic crisis ? . After all they have taken up portfolios to serve the people for which they were elected . Hence , when the people are acutely burdened , why not they sacrifice to alleviate the people’s burdens , he asked. What a colossal amount of people’s money is being wasted when the Govt. holds staggered elections . All these wastages can be saved if the elections were held across the Island at once, he noted.

Right now the Govt.. follows one economic policy faithfully , bringing down the prices of goods just before elections , and raising them steeply soon after elections. Just after the last elections , it increased the Nation building tax from 1% to a 3% . Gas prices were raised and all imports of essential commodities were taxed.

There were five Nation building Ministers until recently . Now , another Minister has been added to this tally. But, all these Ministers together cannot keep the nation building tax at 1% in order to give relief to the people.

Is the Govt. trying to fool all the people all the time , or is it trying to show by its actions that the people deserve punishment for electing the wrong rulers by making them the scapegoats for the Govt.’s misdeeds and financial blunders ? he questioned.

Once rich UNP is now a bankrupt party, who's leader is going around the world insulting & degrading his own country, thinking that he could get foreign support for him to become the next President.
It is too late now for him as the every move of Ranil, Ravi, Pissu Aththanayake & Kekeriella is moving the Sri Lankans away from UNP.
