Major Battle almost over, but no body knows where is Prabhakaran – Ground Commanders

(May 17, Mullaivaikkal, Sri Lanka Guardian) “We are about to free our people of this island nation from the horrendous terror clutches of the LTTE and our winning forces are already readying themselves to end this war and enter into the peace time development of the country when every community be equal partners in the progress of our beloved country,” said the Brigade Commander of the 53 Division speaking to the Sri Lanka Guardian in an exclusive interview.

Major General Kamal Gunarathana speaking to the Sri Lanka Guardian from his mobile office in the Wanni this morning said: “Now the LTTE terrorists are remaining only on a very small piece of land which is approximately less than 1 Sq.km.”

“My 53 Division and 59 Division together had confronted the Tiger terrorists this morning off the Nathikadal Lagoon area and killed more than hundred and fifty LTTE cadres so far. Forty three dead bodies of the Tiger terrorist were recovered by the D3 division and 70 dead bodies were recovered by the 59 division,” said Maj. Gen. Kamal Gunarathna.

However when Sri Lanka Guardian asked about the leader of the Tamil Tigers, the Lt. Gen said that was a difficult question for which to find answers. Nobody knows where the big man is. He may still be hiding in that small area and trying to escape.

“But very soon all details of the battle will come out as the total liberation of the Wanni battle,” Maj. Gen. concluded.

Meanwhile, Brigadier Shavendra Silva, the commander who liberated large areas of the island from the LTTE terrorists commented that as a ground commander we are trying to find all details of the battle. I can’t conform what happened to the senior Tigers and the man called the leader.

Likewise another high ranking officer of the 58 Division told the Sri Lanka Guardian. “ The major battle is almost over from last evening but there have been some small confrontations while the forces were trying to liberate all hostages who are in the hold of the Tigers.”

Meanwhile an unconfined source says, the LTTE’s International relations officer has forwarded a list of about 50 names of the hardcore Tigers including the leadership to a high official of the UN and has requested the UN to save them by getting them out of Sri Lanka under the pretext of UN workers. It is learnt that the UN higher official is also making an effort to get them out of the country.
