Japan provides Rs.35 Mn for Trinco children

(August 12, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Government of Japan has provided US$ 302, 648 (approximately Rs.35 Million) for the “Early Childhood Care and Development Project in Trincomalee District” to be implemented by the Save the Children Japan (SCJ), a Japanese humanitarian NGO, under the Japan-NGO Cooperation Grant Scheme.

The project will include the construction and renovation of pre-schools and sanitary facilities, provision of play materials and supplementary nutrition for children, and facilitate community participation in early childhood care in the five Divisional Secretariats divisions of Eachchilampattai, Gomarankadawela, Muttur, Padavi Sri Pura and Seruvila.

It is envisaged that the project will contribute to promote healthy growth of children and strengthen the community childhood care system and will benefit 3,000 people directly and 80,000 people indirectly.

This project is the second phase of the “Emergency Education Support for Resettled Children in Trincomalee” that the SCJ has implemented in 2008 through the “Japan Platform (JPF),” an umbrella organization for conducting emergency humanitarian assistance outside Japan under the partnership among the Japanese Government, NGOs, private sector, and economic sector.

The SCJ also has been supporting the Emergency Education in the North since March 2009, utilizing Rs.125 million through the JPF.

In addition to the SCJ, six Japanese Humanitarian NGOs are providing emergency support for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) in the North through JPF.
