Speaker Admits he has to deal with jokers too!

(October 23,Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian): A tense situation prevailed in parliament yesterday when a minister interrupted the proceedings of the House on several occasions. The interruptions reached unbearable levels when UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake posed several questions, forcing the Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara to call on the minister to take his seat.

Ravi Karunanayake: Honourable Speaker, you are the Speaker of the House. Now some persons have been brought in to provide humour in the house. Are you not in a position to control them?

Speaker: They are also representatives of the people. Those who provide humour are also in this House.

Ravi Karunanayake: If you are not in a position to control them, please take steps to send them out of the chamber. We do not intend to stoop to such levels.

Dayasiri Jaysekera (UNP): Hon. Speaker, you have the authority to send those who do not behave themselves and act in a disgusting manner in the House out of the chamber. I earnestly request that this type of precedence should not be allowed to prevail. I appeal that you should exercise your authority and send these persons out.

Speaker: I will draw my attention to that matter.
