Journalists shut out at CDS farewell?

(November 16, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Journalists, invited to cover the farewell ceremony to General Sarath Fonseka, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), on Monday morning (today) were not allowed into Army Headquarters in Colombo where the event is taking place.

Dozens of journalists said they were invited by the CDS staff for the event but the army was not allowing them in. The dispute has gone on for about an hour ahead of the event about to happen a while ago at 10 .15 am. However efforts were being made for a CDS vehicle to take the journalists, stranded at the entrance, inside.

The government and General Fonseka have been on a collision course after the former army commander sent in his retirement papers last week, saying President Mahinda Rajapaksa had lost confidence in him.

Fonseka has to eat his own humble pie. He should understand that he is CDS only because it is conferred on him. The glory came with the position not personally for Fonseka. People who are riding high while in a position better learn that they are only one of us when they are out of the appointment. Farewell to CDS is not a public event in any count, and Sarath Fonseka should have left office gracefully as he himself cited that the government has lost faith in him. What alternative the government has rather than accepting his well publicized confidential document. Fonseka has been acting in bad faith when he publicized his so called confidential letter sent to the President. At least now he should fade away from public eye and proceed to US as planned to spend his retirement with making CDS office a circus.
