Kekirawa UNP organizer, 5 others taken into custody

(December 17, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The chief organizer of the United National Party in Kekirawa and five others were taken into custody by police in Kekirawa town yesterday.

Police media spokesman, SSP I. M. Karunarathne said that a tense situation had arisen with the public protesting at attempts by the UNP group to put up posters around 11am.

A person inside a vehicle had threatened the public with a firearm prompting the people there to react, police said.

Police media spokesman claimed that the police had arrived at the scene and had checked a vehicle that was trying to leave the location of the incident. In the vehicle, police had found a licenced firearm belonging to the UNP organizer. Police had also found two home-made firearms (galkatas) inside the jeep, the spokesman claimed.

Police had taken the group along with the jeep into custody. Further investigations are on under the supervision of SSP Anuradhapura.

Sri Lanka has an ancient and distinctive history of gardening, known only to the archaeologists, and perhaps some architects in this country. Very little of this is known abroad.
