Kiribathgoda attack: Desperate acts in face of defeat- Karu

( January 04,Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Karu Jayasuriya, deputy leader of the United National Party, says that the government is acting in a desperate manner in the face of its impending defeat in the upcoming presidential election.

Issuing a statement in connection with the attack on opposition supporters who had been peacefully distributing handbills in Kiribathgoda, Mr. Jayasuriya has said that he was of the view that in the Kelaniya Electoral Division, there was no room for peaceful meetings or democratic political movements.

He has also described the the attitude of the government to turn a blind eye to incidents where those who hold alternative views are attacked in an inhuman manner was an insult to humanity.

“Making the complainant the respondent is a common occurrence that has become a frequent practice these days”, Mr. Jayasuriya said.

The UNP deputy leader also condemned the attacks on journalists and the sanctions that are being imposed on media organisations as well as the anti-democratic activities that are originating from Kelaniya, which do not even allow a political party to carry out any of its work in the area.

While calling on the Elections Commissioner to intervene and prevent this type of activities from continuously taking place, the Deputy Leader of the UNP pointed out that this situation had arisen due to the non existence of independent elections commission and the defunct independent police commission.
