Last chance to change deceptive, corrupt politics: Gen. Fonseka

(January 15, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) “Today the government has politicised everything in the guise of war. They have destroyed the country's law and order. They have built a company of brothers to buy over property. This is the last chance to change this type of corrupt and deceptive politics. This is the time to come forward and decide for the sake of your children and grand children,” said General Sarath Fonseka, the Opposition Common Candidate.

The General, addressing the masses in Nittambuwa, in one of several rallies held yesterday, pledged that he would make the changes the country had been waiting for.
Former Army Commander General Hamilton Wanasinghe was also on stage to pledge support to the General at the meeting in Nittambuwa.

A group including the the Secretary of the Sri Lanka Independent Port Workers' Union also joined the General's rally in support of his candidature for presidency.

“We will forge ahead in this journey and make the change the country has been waiting for. The country has had desperate times in the past but after some time, these situations did change with several good times dawning as well.

“Peace was brought about subsequent to terrorism. The inauspicious time has passed and the auspicious times are ahead. When peace was established with the conclusion of the war, we wanted to see development. The war heroes sacrificed their lives. The people who made sacrifices for the sake of the war, needed to be repaid. But his government didn't let that be done, and they did not do it either.

“They went on holding elections and obtaining victories thanks to the war. They began to steal from the country and obtain bribes in the guise of war. They politicised everything in the guise of the war. They destroyed the country's law and order in the guise of the war. They built the Company of Brothers and bought over property.

“This is your last chance to change this type of corrupt and deceptive politics. You have to take the right decision this time when you can put the country right. You have to come forward and decide for your children and grand children.

“I will create a country where everyone will be able to live safely in dignity without ethnic, religious or language differences. I will create a country where everyone can put aside suspicion and live as one nation,” said the General.

Addressing a meeting in Ragama in support of his candidature, the General said that a parliament would be created that was answerable to the people.

“We will end the era when the people answered to politicians and we will establish the people's supremacy. That is why we presented a very simple manifesto instead of something that drags on like the Mahinda Chintana.

“We know that when we work based on our manifesto, the people will benefit. We haven't put forward policies that will favour individuals, but the entire country,” said the General.

Somawansa Amarasinghe, leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said that everyone was getting ready to accept a new, civilised society on the 27th of January.

“That is what is evident wherever we go. We went to the North, East, South, West, the Central Province and all other provinces as well.

“Everywhere we go, we hear people saying Sarath Fonseka will be the President. That is what we hear. Since that is the truth, they have got excited,” said Amarasinghe.
