My God! G L Pieris!!

Are you suffering from amnesia?
(October 16, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The External Affairs minister of Sri Lanka Prof G L Pieris seems to suffer from early stage of amnesia. His irresolute comments in some capital cities, is only reflecting his confused state of mind. His masterly command of professorial English is making him to discharge all kinds of inappropriate comments to unfitting audience.

What he has to shout and scream deep down in the southern Matara town is being discharged in Beijing- the capital of a country that does not value human rights and sell body parts of the executed criminals in the open market. Let us quote some part of what our GLP said in Beijing to an alien audience recently:

"The conflict is now over and we must now remove the pain in the hearts and minds of the people by setting in motion a healing process, a process of rapprochement.

"How do you so arrange matters as to address the root causes of the problem and embark on a sincere and genuine search for a pragmatic solution that would enable you to remove these scars from the hearts and minds of people and to put this painful experience behind them?

"If you lost your child and your husband, that would be an irreparable loss; no sum of money can compensate you, no apology however sincere, can offer you full redress, but how do you create an environment in which it is possible to come to terms with reality and get on with life as well as one could in these difficult circumstances?

"We want to put in place innovative political arrangements.

“We had the APRC which deliberately dragged its feet until the war was finished; that was understandable, but that process lost its credibility and we the people do not expect anything to come out of it.

“Suffice it to state that unless the political will prevails to reach out to the Tamil people and to allow them in whatever form and manner to have a say and manage their destiny, this problem will remain with us.

“Another problem which requires urgent attention is the large number of Tamil youth in detention under the PTA, which is also a part of the problem. We must seek to win them over and this is a Herculean task for some of them have been active members of the LTTE and without doubt, been totally brainwashed and consider the Sinhalese their enemies. Most of them having been taken in only on suspicion and have been rotting in jail for years and would only have hate in their hearts, having lost the best years of their lives in jail. We must ensure that we do not humiliate these young persons. They could easily fall prey to the Diaspora and their millions to harm our country. We do need to come up with a political solution to head them off.”

Mamma Mia! What an upbeat and honest speech by GL!

The very man on his return to Sri Lanka did not go to Matara to tell his Sinhala folks, what the specially made Won Ton Chinese Soup consumed in the gentle Beijing breeze had done to him to utter such wonderful comments there. GL is not a fool, even though he suffers from amnesia. He know very well that muskat, Dodol, konda kawung and kokkis will fly freely towards him, if he had discharged the very same comments he enjoyed freely speaking in Beijing.

From Beijing, he went to the United Nations in New York. This time he wore another branded suit and failed to say what he uttered in Beijing. His passionate comment: "If you lost your child and your husband, that would be an irreparable loss; no sum of money can compensate you, no apology however sincere, can offer you full redress, but how do you create an environment in which it is possible to come to terms with reality and get on with life as well as one could in these difficult circumstances?" was forgotten altogether and left behind in the memory lane – a real symptom of amnesia.

Then he went to India. Suffering in the heat-waves of Delhi, the learned Professor decided to wear another set of coolly coat and went on to state:

"It is impossible to talk of exact time frame for implementing the 13th amendment, it is a great mistake to do because if you talk of timeframe and then you are not able to complete the process, it is bound to be conjecture, speculative, then there is erosion of credibility.

"In these constitutional processes things cannot be telescoped into clearly defined time frame we don't think that's the way to go about it.

"Government of Sri Lanka is committed to the implementation of 13th amendment except of one feature of it. What we want to do is engage in discussions with important stakeholders you know what has happened in the past is a 'top down approach' in which the government announced what it wishes to do and that approach was not succeeded so this time around we want to do differently.

"The Sri Lankan president has started discussion with different political parties, we want to carry forward that discussion get ideas from stakeholders and that should be the starting point of meaningful process that could culminate in implementation.

"Sri Lanka is resurrecting its electoral process to empower people and provide political space for minority Tamils so that they emerge as credible interlocutors for the community on the issue devolution of powers.

"Tamil leaders that are thrown up by political process, many of them were wiped out like leader of opposition was assassinated by the LTTE, there is a gap to be filled.

Prof. Pieris! Why there is lack of fast tracking and hidden agenda in not pushing forward the changes to the 13th amendment at the same speed of pushing through the 18th amendment through the parliament? Hope you have not forgotten the speed at which the 18th amendment to the constitution was passed recently in the parliament.

GLP said something about ‘resurrecting the electoral process’. Is it another attempt to side-line the Tamils in the never ending marginalisation process that he is contributing whilst wolf crying for the Tamils in Beijing.

All what he said in Delhi is appropriate to the Jaffna audience or more appropriately to the Diaspora Tamils.

GL knows where to say what and what to avoid where. He knows how to avoid eggs being thrown at his face or even slipping and falling on a banana skin placed to respond to his eloquence.

His next flying trip will be to the United Kingdom, possibly accompanying the President, Dr Mahendra Percy Rajapakse. Let us wait and see how he is going to enjoy the freedom of speech in the mother of democracy. Another creative verbal vomit to hit hard at the Tamil Diaspora that too had lost the mother, father and experiencing the irreparable losses will be the much awaited diatribe.
