Another Crime by Narcotics Branch

(December 03, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) R. Mangalika is a 30 years old mother with one child. Her husband, who was working in a hardware company abandoned her when she was sent to prison. Her only child, a 5-year-old daughter, is under the care of her mother.

Managalika gave a friend Rs.50, 000/= as a loan. One day this so called friend sent a message to Mangalika and asked her to visit her home so that she could repay the debt. However, when she arrived at her friend's house she found narcotics officers there. The friend said the heroine, which was in the house, belonged to Mangalika.

The narcotics officers fabricated charges against Mangalika for possession of 160g of heroine and they also fabricated charges on her brother for possession of 70g of heroine. They also charged the friend for possession of 36g heroine. But later both her brother and her friend were released.

Mangalika has now been remanded in the women’s ward at the Welikada prison for more than 51 months. Her case is being heard in the Maligakanda Magistrate Court. She wants to plead innocent but there is nobody to help her hire a lawyer.
