UNP opens local election campaign in Jaffna

(February 17, Jaffna, Sri Lnaka Guardian) The UNP opened its local election campaign in Jaffna today with senior members of the party taking part in the events.

UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya launching the party’s election campaign in Jaffna urged voters to make use of the upcoming poll to create national Tamil leaders.

Mr. Jayasuriya addressing UNP candidates and supporters in Jaffna said that the local elections was a good opportunity to create politicians who could move on to the Provincial councils and thereafter to Parliament and ending up at Temple Trees.

General Secretary Tissa Attanayake and Dr. Jayalth Jayawardena were among the UNP members taking part in the campaign.

The UNP members earlier landed at the Palaly airport and first visited the Nallur Temple for religious observances before launching the campaign. They distributed fishing equipment for fishermen in Velvettiturai.

Thereafter they addressed a gathering at the residence of UNP MP Vijayakala Maheshwaran, the widow of former UNP MP T.Maheshwaran.

 
The UNP members are due to travel by road to Vavuniya on Friday where they will be addressing at least two meetings.
