New Year In Jaffna

It is not my intention to hurt the feelings of any body. Those in charge of the Civil Administration know better, of the bitter feelings of the people who had lost everything and is in no mood for celebrations. I do not blame specifically, that the army is pressuring the people.

(April 15, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) It is very unfortunate that Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe had completely misunderstood me. Initially I like to tell him that I am not one who seeks cheap popularity or political gains. From his Excellency the President down-words everyone knows well that, if I am like some others, I would be in Parliament today. I am as patriotic as any other person in this country, about which the country knows well. I had never been unpatriotic and whatever I do is always in the good interest of the country, but may not be to the liking of everyone. I do not doubt the integrity of the Major General and he should also know of my concerns for my country and its people. I only reflect the thinking of the people. My own people have not understood me properly still. Then how can I blame others? Major General is the only commanding officer of Jaffna whom I had not met. If we had ever met there would have been better understood between both of us. As alleged by him I did not have any vicious intention of neither destructing the peaceful life of the Jaffna People nor trying to create a bad impression about our forces, among the foreigners, but as for me I had been, up to now, always praising the humanitarian activities of the Forces and had off and on paid high complements for the humanitarian services rendered by the Forces of all ranks and of the fair sex in particular.

It is not my intention to hurt the feelings of any body. Those in charge of the Civil Administration know better, of the bitter feelings of the people who had lost everything and is in no mood for celebrations. I do not blame specifically, that the army is pressuring the people. But the mere presence of the army will certainly amount to that and no one will have the courage to refuse any participation. In my opinion the active participation of the army in such celebrations will be counterproductive and the International Community also will look upon it with suspicion.

It had been my practice to notify the party concerned either by fax or by E-mail before any matter is release to the press. This time too I had posted the letter but could not fax it or E-mail it, since the fax number and the E-mail address are not known.

If I had caused any embarrassment to Major General Hathurusinghe I am sorry for it.
