Young Girl student of Nuwara Eliya is missing and police refuse to act

(September 09, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Shanathi was a student of Gamini Maha Vidyalaya, Nuwara Eliya. She was the elderst of the family and had two younger sisters and one younger brother. Her father was working at the Nuwara-Eliya municipality. Shanathi was doing her university entrance exam (Advance Level) in science. She was an intelligent student and followed tuition classes during the weekend in Kandy. When Shanathi came to Kandy during the weekend, she used to stay with her aunt in Mahawatte – Kundasale (18/3, Mahawatte, Keppetipola Watte, Kundasale).

A boy by the name of Kamal a three wheeler driver (WP QA 7194) was interested in Shanathi and has come after her. However she has not consented saying that she is a student.

On the 03rd September 2011 Shanathi went to her school to Gamini Maha Vidyalaya to sit for her final paper ( Sinhala General Paper) and she did not return home. Around 02.19 p.m. her father R.J.K. Niel has received a telephone call from Kamal and Kamal has said that Shanthi is with him, if possible to save her within an hour. Niel the father of Shanthi has immediately made a complaint to the Nuwara Eliya police (entry no W CIB 86/32) and the police officers have promised to inform the Balagolla police station. However even by that time Kamal probably had Shanathi in his custody in Nuwara Eliya.

On the 04th September 2011 Niel the father of Shanathi had gone to Kamal’s house in Mahawatte, Kundasale in search of Shanthi and Kamals father who was after liquer, had assaulted Niel. On the 05th September 2011 Niel had gone to Balagolla police station to make a complain but the police officers have refused to accept the complaint and have said that Niel should go to Nuwara Eliya police station. Niel made a complaint at the Kandy ASP's office on the 09th of September and then he was directed to Balogolla ploice station, however the Balogolla police officers told him that because of the cricket match between SriLanka and Australia played in Pallekelle that there are no police officers available to attend to this.

Niel and his wife Ajantha Edirisinghe have not heard anything about Shanathi and would like to know whether she is alive.
