EDITORIAL: Rajapakistan--- Blocking the Webs

Rajapakse and his mouth pieces are lying over registration

Are we in a well-informed society under this President Mahinda Rajapakse who seems to be grabbing more and more power himself while murdering the Freedom of the Nation?

(November 07, New Delhi, Sri Lanka Guardian) Last Saturday ( November 05), we received from our source in Colombo, the press statement signed by Mr. Ariyarathana Athugala as the Director General of Information. In that press statement, Mr. Athugala states that all websites reporting in Sri Lanka were required to be registered immediately. He has also given contact details in his statement indicating that further information could be obtained from those contacts.

Before responding to the above, we decided to check their website. We wanted to verify details regarding the above requirements. That website had been last updated on October 31 and there was no reference to the above requirement to register. It carried President Rajapakse’s speech at the concluding session of Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth Sunday (30th Oct).

We find the above requirement weird and it seems especially strange coming from Mr. Athugala who was head of Mass Communication Department at the University of Kalaniya for many years before he became Director General of Information . We feel strongly that this current position has been given to him due to his strong political association with the current President. It is indeed weird that Mr. Athugala’s own website remains silent about this requirement, whilst we are being asked to register ! We made several visits to their website mentioned by Mr. Ahtugala in his statement but so far the updates have not happened.

The Sri Lanka Guardian has been blocked in Sri Lanka where we enjoy wide readership. This is not the first time the Sri Lanka Guardian has been blocked in Sri Lanka. Since its launch in 2007, we have gone through many forms of censorship. Many other independent web sites – for example Sri Lanka Mirror, Lanka News Web and LankaENews have also been blocked this time.

We publish screen shot of the government’s web site and we urge the ruling party government to publish the law on the basis of which this blocking of the free media through public domain has been initiated. We highlight that to block us through secretive and arbitrary decision making processes would seem unjust and suppressive to the Public.

It is amusing that the official website of the Government says, "Achieving excellence in the total practice of media by facilitating to usher in a people-friendly, development oriented, free and responsible media culture ". Also its goal ( vision)  being , "A well-informed wise- Society". Are we in a well-informed society under this President Mahinda Rajapakse who seems to be grabbing more and more power himself while murdering the Freedom of the Nation?
