Given the government's limitation of press, how are reporters able to report anything which may not be in the favor of the government without being killed or jailed. Even so, many human rights organization has condemned the conditions of the camps as well as the UN. It seems that in the eyes of the Sri Lankan masses, having a vested interest in the human rights is equated with sympathizing with terrorist. It seems that mass have chosen to apply the rhetoric of George Bush and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, two examples of pathetic and weak leadership in any form. Now one can add Mahinda Rajapaksa to the list. Sri Lankan should be embarrassed to have the let this sham of democratic reign for this long.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11797170638081178902noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2468613367801394261.post-89289958269484202702009-11-10T01:41:16.559+05:302009-11-10T01:41:16.559+05:30The Sri Lankan government is keeping the people in...The Sri Lankan government is keeping the people in camps to prevent them from sharing stories to the media and the outside world about the war crimes the witnessed.
I commend A Roy for commenting on Sri Lanka and her objective vision which enables her to draw parallels with India.Nastaran Wijetungehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12094937312728059102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2468613367801394261.post-8678025503291985402009-11-09T14:06:09.374+05:302009-11-09T14:06:09.374+05:30It is not necessary to personally visit every prob...It is not necessary to personally visit every problem area oneself to make a comment. A team of MPs and TN government authorities have done the visit and given a pretty reliable account of the grim situation there. Most people in Tamilnadu have been following the history pretty carefully, it has even been documented and shown as a film on various TV networks. They speak the same language as Tamils, but that does notmen others can feel free to ignore that they are hapless beings being kept in atrocious conditions. Arundati Roy has made the effort to study it, perhaps better then the person who criticised her for not knowing and for being a nobody!

Someone who can confuse the LTTE's activities and terrorism with the starved masses there has plainly not even seen any documentaries of these people! Its evident that "our" Indian media of all the media in the world has shunned the atrocities committed towards the Tamils... Its in fact sad to see all the so called developed countries' journalism gives people, what the Govt wants the people to know... Nobody will take up armed struggle and demand a separate nation for nothing...

All these times i have never seen a SL Tamil in any of those camps giving a first hand information of what is happening in those camps(if u dismiss all those reports of atrocities in those camps as rumors, of course!!). It is the Sinhalese who had to defend themselves against racism fostered by the Tamils in Srilanka. The British cleverly used the Tamils as their pawns to prevent the Sinhalese from challenging their colonisation of this land, and the Tamils wanted this special position to continue. And starting with Ponnambalam's 50-50 cry, they were never ready to assimilate with the other races to be part of the change that overtakes civilisations. The tragedy is that such racism still continues into modern times. You better catch up with your history lessons Ms.Roy. Maybe we can take you seriously after that.Priyadevhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12087277014295829247noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2468613367801394261.post-50718252705419366642009-11-03T17:30:26.958+05:302009-11-03T17:30:26.958+05:30It is a sad fact of life that today people who kno...It is a sad fact of life that today people who know nothing about a situation are allowed to write about them. She has not visited the camps, an so has no direct knowledge. She could not have read about it in the Indian press, as she says they were careful not to write about them. So what she writes is fantasy. What is most galling is the fact that the Tamils who escaped to India in the previous years, be it from the government or the terrorists are held in cmps in South India in conditions far worse than in Sri Lanka.
