"Appoint CCs before next election"

(November 24, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian)
UNP Gen. Secretary and MP Tissa Attanayake addressing the media said , though the UNP is ready to face elections at any time , the Govt. cannot be allowed to conduct elections according to its whims and fancies violating the election laws , and engaging in vote rigging and intimidation of voters . In the last provincial Council elections, the Govt. abused State resources including vehicles, buildings and Public servants to suit its deceitful purposes. But for these election malpractices , the Govt. would have faced defeat , he added.

This is why , the Govt. does not want to appoint the Constitutional Councils (CC) before the elections ,which will legally preclude Govt.’s politicization of the public sector , the police and the Elections Commission.

The Govt. has conveyed the notion of a snap election probably in order to avoid the appointment of the CCs . Like all the Govt.’s actions and statements , even on this subject each Minister is making utterances contradicting the other , he lamented.

In any event , an election is imperative at this juncture because the true mandate of the people is not reflected in today’s Parliament, he observed.
