Japan funds for reconstruction of Galle Fisheries Harbour

(December, 10, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Government of Japan provided a grant of approximately 708 million rupees (706 million Japanese yen) to reconstruct the Fisheries Harbour under the Non-Project Grant Aid for rehabilitation and reconstruction of tsunami affected areas.

Immediately after the tsunami the government of Japan has granted US$ 80 million as Non-Project Grant Aid to rebuild and reconstruct the lives of tsunami affected.

The reconstructed harbour has facilities such as an ice plant with a production capacity of 50 tons per day, cold storage, quay wall, slipway for fishing vessels for safe navigation, winch house, auction hall, two storied building for the office of Ceylon Fishery Harbour Cooperation, a canteen for harbour staff, etc.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) assisted in preparation of the designing of the Galle Fisheries Harbour. The Japan International Cooperation System (JICS) supervised the project.
