Will Pakistan soon become another Iraq?

by Saybhan Samat in Colombo to Sri Lanka Guardian

(December,20, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) President Pervez Musharaff thought that he could sweep under the carpet the murder and massive blood-shed of religious students of the Lal-Masjid mosque and Madrasah on July 10 in the capital of Islamabad.

The immediate response to this mass murder of Muslim religious students which included women was the vow by the pro-Taliban elements in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) especially North and South Waziristan and in Baluchistan to make the situation in Pakistan worse than in Iraq.

Pro-Taliban militants in the two weeks following the Lal Masjid assault killed hundreds of soldiers and paramilitary personnel in Swat, Dera, Ismail Khan, Miran Shah, Kohat, Hangu and Hub (in the far south of the country).

There was also a bomb explosion at a lawyers’ rally in the capital Islamabad on July 17 killing 19 people and injuring 50 others. The Chief Justice Ifthikar Mohamed Chaudhry a secularist who was supposed to speak at the rally was apparently the intended target, but had not arrived at the rally when the bomb went off.

In South Waziristan 600 troops among them a colonel and more than a dozen majors and captains were captured by the Mehsud tribesmen on August 31. 300 were relased, but the other 300 are still in captivity at the time of writing. The demoralized soldiers surrendered to about 25 lightly armed tribesmen and handed over all their equipment, including 17 trucks.

More recently on October 25, militants seized and beheaded 13 civilians and security officers in northwest Pakistan after government troops launched an assault on a radical cleric’s hideout.

The beheadings took place on late Friday October 26 in the Swat valley in the North West Frontier loyal to the cleric, who has been driving a fierce campaign to introduce Taliban inspired laws.

The military earlier in the week deployed more than 2,000 troops to the region to bolster efforts to crackdown on militant attacks launched against the government leaders and security forces.

An explosion tore through a security forces’ vehicle in Swat on October 25, killing 30 people, in an apparent reaction to the arrival of the troops.

Apparently, Benazir Bhutto was not aware of the serious rise in militancy of the Islamists demanding Sharia-rule in Pakistan. Pakistan was created in the name of Islam and its rulers have Muslim names but they are secular and do not abide by Islamic principles.

The present day Muslim rulers are removed from Islam, despite their Islamic credentials or pretensions because they are subservient to non-Muslim powers like the US and dependent on them to stay in power.

Both Benazir Bhutto and Pervez Musharaff are more than willing to destroy those who are crying for the Sharia and wanting an Islamic form of government. Both are echoing the slogans of the US claiming those struggling for Islamic government are terrorists and extremists.

Both are willing to kill their fellow countrymen to please the US. Hence both are prime-targets of the militants. Pervez Musharaff has escaped three attempts on his life, while Bhutto escaped one.

Bhutto craves to be the Prime-Minister of Pakistan again and she is willing to be killed in her attempt.

Dismissed twice on corruption charges Bhutto went into self-imposed exile while investigations continued into millions she had allegedly stashed away into Swiss bank accounts.

For Bhutto it is do or die!

Bhutto has only been able to return because Musharaff, knows that his future depends on the grassroots diehard supporters inherited from her father’s party, the PPP As a result, Musharaff, who in his first months in power declared it his express intention to wipe out corruption, has dropped all charges against her and granted her immunity from persecution.

However, it should be noted that the militants who are pro-Taliban do not have a clear understanding of Islam, the functions of the Islamic state and how to go about establishing one. They understand Islam primarily in terms of restrictive laws concerning personal behaviour.

The much larger questions of political legitimacy and social and economic justice are not known to them. Islam injunctions are not merely concerned with punishments; they are just as concerned with regulating the market place and the weighty issues of power and authority.

How a person acquires power and what the limits are on its use, are all part of the Islamic value system. What the Taliban did in Afghanistan when they were in power was an aberration, they did not permit women to be educated, closed all girls’ schools, smashed television sets, banned music, burnt shops selling DVDs, VCDs. and CDs executed barbers shaving beards and even punished women exposing a part of their feet.

The Taliban believed that Islamic standards can be imposed by force or threats of violence, and that all that Islam requiries is to burn down video shops, raid body parlours or force women to wear burqa.

Iran stands out today as a shining example of how an Islamic state should be run. Alas! Other Muslim countries have not followed this example. Iran is stable, advanced in technology, independent and the regional power in the Middle-East.

The battle lines are drawn the secularists are on one side and the pro-Taliban militants on the other. The secularists will be supported by the US and the Taliban is ignorant of the real true Islam.

The scenario is an explosive recipe for another Iraq in the Indian sub-continent with countless number of militants willing to engage in suicide bombings and both sides willing to kill as many Muslims on either side, causing another tragedy for Islam and Muslims much to the delight of the US.
