Let us go through the memory lane.

(February 03, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Can we take this government’s claims that it will win the war? Another chapter of euphoria and hoodwink? Who are the real victims of deceptive and un-winnable war? It is the innocent civilian population indeed.

In 1979 President Junius Richard Jayawardene:

‘Unable to stem the tide of violence unleashed by the LTTE, the Jayewardene's government enacted the notorious Anti-Terrorism Act on the 20th of July, 1979. J.R. Jayawardene gave orders to his nephew Brigadier Weeratunga to go to the North and destroy all forms of terrorism within 6 months, that is before December 31, 1979’.

In 1996 the Deputy Defence Minister Anurudha Ratwatte said.

Claiming victory over LTTE in the Jayasekuru Operations in Jaffna peninsula, the President Chandrika Kumaratunge’s uncle, the self made General Anurudha Ratwatte said, ‘We have defeated the LTTE and the remaining cadres must jump into the sea.’

On 28 July 1997 Army Spokes person Brigadier Sarath Munasinghe said.

'Last Thursday, the Sri Lankan army spokesman, Brigadier Sarath Munasinghe, claimed that the Tigers were being defeated and that victory was in sight.’

And now (12 January 2008),
Sri Lanka Army Chief Lt Gen Sarath Fonseka says:
‘the Tamil Tiger rebels will be militarily defeated before he retires from service at the end of this year.

'I do not want to leave this problem to the next army commander,' the general, who would be retiring in December, told newspersons here Friday.

'We (the armed forces) are doing very well. And at the rate we are going, there will be major changes in the coming six to seven months. You will see a different LTTE then,' he said.

Comment:

In 1978 LTTE terrorism was at the infant stage. It was isolated attacks in the northern Jaffna peninsula.

Though LTTE is a weaker body now, its ability to engage full scale attacks is intact still. Compared to 1978, it is sophisticated machinery.

Sri Lankan leaders have failed time and again. They may win battles but have failed to prove they can defeat LTTE terrorism. General Anurudha Ratwatte even marched from the North to Mankulam and further down but ended marching back to his garrisons.

Can we take this government’s claims that it will win the war? Another chapter of euphoria and hoodwink? Who are the real victims of deceptive and un-winnable war? It is the innocent civilian population indeed.

Arms procurement agents the so-called Commission Kaka’s are driving this war machinery and the war industry is once again establishing its roots whilst the civilian population is facing the roasting of the monstrous and evil forces that are making them easy prey.
