LTTE man campaign for boycott of Marks & Spencer

“With dwindling support base of the LTTE in the UK, the one man campaign of S Karunalingam is considered by many Tamils as irritant hate behaviour. Karunalingam was in the forefront on the campaign to ‘boycott Sri Lankan Airlines’ few months ago.”

(April 30, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) The UK based LTTE frontline activist Sockalingam Karunalingam known as Kannan who is the head of the LTTE front Tharisanam TV in the UK is spearheading a campaign to boycott the Marks & Spenser products by the Tamils. The campaign has been initiated following a visit by a CEO of Marks & Spenser Sir Stuart Rose.

Website associated with the Tharisanam TV reported ‘a visiting top executive of Marks and Spencer (M&S), the major British retailer, last week assured Cabinet Ministers, Prof. G. L. Peiris and Dr. Sarath Amunugama that he would push Sri Lanka’s case for GSP+ concessions. "I understand how important the GSP+ scheme is for Sri Lanka. I will do everything possible to support your application for these concessions", said Sir Stuart Rose, the Chief Executive Officer of M&S, the largest clothing operator in the United Kingdom.

The news headlined ‘Tamils to boycott M&S goods? M&S is going against the EU Policy on Sri Lanka!’ further stated ‘perhaps, elated over Sir Stuart’s pledge to champion Sri Lanka GSP+ cause, Ministers Peiris and Amunugama were on their feet to congratulate the eminent foreign visitor after his inspiring speech who was not interested in the abuse of power by the Sri Lankan Government on minority. He showed no concern whatsoever about the killings of Tamil children and the poor Human Rights record of the Sri Lankan Government’.

With dwindling support base of the LTTE in the UK, the one man campaign of S Karunalingam is considered by many Tamils as irritant hate behaviour. Karunalingam was in the forefront on the campaign to ‘boycott Sri Lankan Airlines’ few months ago. According to Sri Lankan Airlines sources, since the anti Sri Lankan Airline campaign the airline is operating services to its optimum capacity. The LTTE campaign too had ended with a media razzmatazz which fizzled out when Tamils ignored the campaign.
