In the face of the war climate, problems of the people are increasing. Particularly people who live in the uncontrolled are facing numerous problems. Disruption of the transportation and the inability to travel to outstations are challenges, they face.

Meanwhile, A9 road, which is the only land route to the Vanni area, has been closed since last Wednesday. There has been no transport from Vavuiya to Vanni for the last two days. It is said that ICRC has vacated from the Omanthai check point following air raid near the Omanthai check point. As a result the transport is crippled.

An ICRC Spokesperson has expressed the view that their members will return to their duties if security guarantee is given for the safe passage of the people and their members.

Supply of essential food items are also affected by the closure of the A9 high way. There is already a dearth of essential goods in Vanni. As a result, children, mothers and elders are suffering from malnutrition.

ICRC members are doing their duties under very trying conditions. Therefore it is important to ensure their safety. As a result of the frequent air raids, people fear for their lives. Even though assurances are given that air raids will be avoided in the civilian populated areas, they are not honoured.

In any event, it is import to ensure the safety of the innocent people.

We would like to stress that it is a humanitarian responsibility to fulfill the needs of the Vanni people on the basis that the people who live in Vanni are also citizens of this country.
