(November 10, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) The monsoon session of Tamilnadu Assembly, which began today was adjourned in seven minutes without transacting any business after condoling the death of MDMK MLA Veera Elavarasan and adopting obituary references in respect of six former MLAs.

Soon after the House assembled, Speaker R Avudaiyappan made the obituary references in respect of former members O P Somasundaram, D C Vijayendriah, R Eswaran, V Thangavelu, R Thavasi and Mohan Kandasamy who died in the intervening period of April to November.

After observing a minute’s silence, the House mourned the death of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and CPI-M Harkishen Singh Surjeet.

Later, the House passed a condolence resolution moved by the Speaker to mourn the death of MDMK member Veera Elavarasan who died in Madurai on 8 November.

The House expressed its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and observed a two- minute silence, after which the Speaker adjourned the day’s proceedings.

Later, the Business Advisory Committee of the State Assembly met at the Speaker’s Chamber and decided to hold the present session till 14 November.

There would be Question Hour on 11, 12 and 13 November . This would be followed by introduction of Bills and debate on Supplementary Estimates.

Later, talking to reporters, Avudaiyappan said he had received several adjournment motions from various parties, including the Congress, the Opposition AIADMK and the PMK.

Refusing to divulge the nature of the motions, he said he would study them in detail and decide upon placing them before the House. To a question, the Speaker said that so far he had not received any political resolution from the government on the boiling Sri Lankan Tamils issue, which was expected to generate much heat in the Assembly.

He also said Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi MLA Selvam was yet to submit his resignation letter on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, after media reports said he was expected to put in his papers before the Speaker today.

Avudaiyappan replied in the negative when asked whether leader of the Opposition and AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa had petitioned him demanding enhanced security in the wake of the attack on her convoy at Pasumpon on 31October when she went there to pay obeisance to freedom fighter Muthuramalinga Thevar’s centenary celebrations.
