Sri Lanka to re-open its Embassy in Baghdad

(May 18, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Vice President of Iraq, Adil Abd Al-Mahadi and the Minister of Investment of Pakistan, Waqar Ahamed Khan called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa last Friday (15th May 2009) in Amman, Jordan on the sidelines of the meetings of the World Economic Forum on the Middle East and the G-11 Summit. They complimented the President on the success achieved in defeating terrorism in Sri Lanka and the measures taken to rescue the civilians held captive by the LTTE. They reiterated their governments' fullest support towards Sri Lanka's efforts in seeking a political solution to the conflict.

President Rajapaksa welcomed the recent positive developments in Iraq which has led to the consolidation of democracy and triggering economic growth and prosperity. The Sri Lankan President and the Iraqi Vice President agreed that Sri Lanka would soon reopen its Embassy in Baghdad headed by an Ambassador and that the diplomatic representation of Iraq in Colombo would be upgraded to Ambassadorial level.

Iraqi Vice President, Al-Mahadi assured President Rajapaksa that the Government of Iraq would take all possible measures to facilitate enhanced market access for Sri Lankan tea and to attract Sri Lankan labour including in specialized fields, with the ongoing economic drive in Iraq opening up new employment opportunities.

The President thanked the Vice President Al-Mahadi for his Government's reaffirmation of support for Sri Lanka, adding that the exchange of trade delegations between the two countries in the future would enhance the prospects for expanded bilateral trade. Both leaders agreed that there would be an exchange of high level visits in the future facilitating the further consolidation of diplomatic relations established in 1962.

Receiving the Minister of Investment of Pakistan, Wastan in their ongoing efforts to defeat terrorism and promoting regional economic development. They eqar Ahamed Khan the President expressed solidarity with the Government and the people of Pakixpressed the view that Sri Lanka and Pakistan would benefit from expanding economic and trade cooperation and establishing joint investment ventures in specific areas. It was agreed to adopt a more structured approach in these areas in the future.
