(July 21, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Eastern Provincial Council today passed a resolution today calling the central government not to allocate state land without approval of the council.

This follows a move by the government to allocate a valuable piece of land in Kantale for a timber trader from Moratuwa to cut down the trees and put up a Banana cultivation. The trader was reported to be backed by non cabinet minister Susantha Punchinilame who is also involved in rehabilitation work in the province, the council was told.

The resolution was proposed by a UPFA member T. Thevarapperuma and seconded by member M.K.D.S.Gunawardena
