India’s concerns expressed in action

(July 17, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) India’s High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, Mr Alok Prasad,during his recent visit to the north made it a point to meet various dignitaries and officials to acquaint himself and his staff of the situation in this region. Among various places he visited, the University of Jaffna was one and the other was the Jaffna Public Library.

He also visited the Jaffna Teaching Hospital and learnt for himself the needs there in staff and equipment as well as the various health needs of the people of this province.Thereafter he met various representatives of the community and had consultations as to how best India can play a role through the Government of Sri Lanka to meet the developing needs of the area especially in the civil war ravaged sectors.

Mr Prasad said that India has allocated 500 crore rupees towards the needs of the people of the Wanni and this is over and above the medical assistance that is being provided to the displaced people there.

He also said four Indian de-mining teams are ready to become engaged in freeing the Wanni of the deadly incendiary devices.
