US welcomes Lanka’s efforts to probe rights abuses report

(October 28, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian)Ian Kelly, the US State Department spokesman has welcomed Sri Lankan government's effort to appoint a committee to examine the contents of a recent report that was prepared by the US State Department.
Answering a question from a journalist at the daily media briefing at the State Department, Ian Kelly said that those reports on setting up an investigation commission were welcome.

“This kind of reaction is what the United States is expecting, to look into these very serious allegations of human rights abuses,” said Kelly.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Monday decided to appoint a committee to examine the contents of the report in question.

The report submitted to the US Congress outlined incidents alleged to have taken place during the recent conflict in the island.

The committee would be an independent entity consisting several high ranking intellectuals.
