(May 18, Toronto, Sri Lanka Guardian) It was this day, May the 18th of 2009 which marked the end of Terrorism and Separatism in Srilanka. This was the historic day that brought Peace to all Srilankans and Democracy to Tamils in the North and East. It was May 18th that made the guns silenced. This May 18th is the day that unified the entire country as ONE Srilanka. This is the day we regained the lost portion of our paradise from the Vanni Regime. It is the day our beloved Motherland, the Paradise of the East crushed and thrashed out the evil forces. So Rejoice O’ Srilanka, It’s your Day.

It was 18 May 2009, Srilankans in homeland and around the world came together to celebrate the most victories day in their life. The jubilant mood in Srilanka and Srilankans throughout the world when they heard Pirapaharan was killed is nothing less than of the jubilant mood of the people of United States of America, when Terrorist leader Osama was killed. Srilanka fought it war within its boundaries and enemy within. The Srilankan Armed forces with its limited capabilities encounter the world most ruthless Terrorist evil force and won the war, not doing a covert operation but faced the enemy with courage in the field.

The death toll of Americans in September 2011 was only 3000 and if the revenge taken by Americans was celebrated in such a grand manner, how much should you rejoice and celebrate you Srilanka for loosing thousands and thousands of innocent civilians over three decades of Terrorist war? This was the day you’re longing for, aren’t you Srilanka? So Rejoice O’ Srilanka. It’s your day on earth.

The three decade of Terrorist and Separatist war has ruined the life of each and every Srilankan in every way. From one end of the country to the other end, every citizen of the country has gone through a horrible time and agony during this period. No one will be able to justify the death and sorrows felt by every house in the country. It is the right time for every Srilankan to give a serious thought to put the country interest first and leave everything to second. The differences between us have already taken a heavy toll and it’s unbearable, and it’s our responsibility to create a bright and prosperous future to our future generations to live in unity and peacefully. The political leaders of the country have more responsibilities in the country than the citizens of the country to create such atmosphere and lead the country to the right direction.

It is high time the Tamil leaders to openly acknowledge their mistakes of the past and leave their destructive politics now and should play a responsible role in Srilankan main stream politics. It is the duty of moderate Tamil leaders to join together and give a strong leadership to the Tamil people who had been misguided by the Tamil extremist. The destructive politics of TNA, has to be filled and countered with constructive political of the moderate Tamil leaders. The responsibility of the moderate Tamil leaders is to play an active role to bring the people into main stream politics and to ensure that the Tamil people will not be carried away by emotions and wrong slogans of the TNA as in the past and become a alternative political force of the Tamils.

On the other hand, it is also the duty of every Tamils in the North and East to give up their unrealistic demands and work together with their Sinhala and Muslim brothers. Tamils should understand the ground reality and give up living in false dreams. This May 18 is one of the very important day for Tamils than the Sinhalese in the South, because this day brought freedom and Democracy to the entire people of North and East. There is much to celebrate for Tamils than Sinhalese for you became free from slavery and Independent from Vanni regime. So rejoice O’ My Tamils. Rejoice. No more fears and no more tears. Your child will not be snatched from you for forced military training nor will be sent as a suicide bomber.

This May 18th is not just a day only to rejoice and celebrate O’ Srilanka, but also a day remember the three decades of Terrorist and Separatist war and sufferings and sacrifice made by all the Srilankans. Think of the innocent lives of young and old, men, women and children, who were killed by suicide bombings and killed by Terrorist in various attacks. Remember the huge loss to our economy followed by social crisis. If you wish all this tragedy should not happen again, Be United O’ Srilanka. Keep your differences aside. Stay together O’ Srilanka. Out of all differences and short comings, Let us all be United and celebrate this Victory. Let us vow to keep and safeguard the Victory won. Rejoice O’ Srilanka. You are free from Terrorism. Rejoice O’ Srilanka you have defeated Separatism.
