Musharraf wins but faces fight for power

Pakistan's president has secured another five years in office, but life for half his countrymen remains a daily battle for survival

(October 7, 2007, Islamabad, Sri Lanka Guardian) Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf won a landslide victory in a controversial presidential election yesterday. He won 252 of 257 votes cast in the National Assembly and Senate. One rival, former judge Wajihuddin Ahmad won two votes while Makhdoom Amin Fahim, vice-chairman of Pakistan People's Party, got none. Three votes were rejected.

But Musharraf must now await a decision by the Supreme Court, which said that the winner cannot be officially declared until at least October 17 while it hears legal challenges.
