“Rajapakse’s Blunder”

(January, 02, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Addressing the Media conference at the UNP Media unit today (2 Jan) , UNP Parliamentarian Lakhman Kiriella referring to the cold blooded murder of UNP and Colombo District MP said that the UNP has enough grounds to believe that assassins are in league with the Govt. ,which is why the Govt. is now working enthusiastically not to apprehend the culprits nor for an impartial investigation , but, to change the course of investigation and legal processes normally attendant on such an assassination.

He cited many reasons for the UNP to come to this conclusion:

Maheswaran was an MP who when he was alive, even, the IGP report had confirmed that he should be given additional security.

Maheswaran threatened to reveal in Parliament the names of those Ministers and others behind the abductions, killings and extortions in the North

After the Govt. pruned down his security stating that he has no LTTE threats, now within 24 hours of his demise, says it is an LTTE killing.

Even before an investigation has been properly started, and a magisterial inquiry is conducted, how can the IGP come to this conclusion? Kiriella asked. If this is true, then, is it not the President and the Govt. who should take full responsibility for this murder because it pruned down his security?

This IGP’s statement that it is an LTTE killing even before an investigation proper proves that the Govt. was aware of the killing ahead of the murder, and had prepared itself to cover it up blaming on the LTTE. Or, it is trying to divert the course of investigations and/ or suppress facts by dismissing the murder as just another LTTE killing.

In the earlier murders too of MPs Raviraj and Pararajasingham, the President and Govt. have failed to arrest anyone nor were the reports on the investigations released.

Kiriella asserted that the UNP is to ask Parliament when it resumes on 8th Jan. to summon the IGP to explain as to how he made the conclusion that it is a LTTE killing even before any investigation proper had been instituted on the murder.

Kiriella also made a special request to all UNPers to attend the funeral of Late K. Maheswaran tomorrow the 03rd of Jan.
