“Dance along with music are the most eloquent expressions of civilization and culture. We are all in a constant state of sharing our innermost feelings, aspirations and thoughts through movements, gestures and expressions both verbal and non-verbal. These play an important role in the way beings and lesser beings communicate with each other and expressing through the dance is the most beautiful means of communication.”

(March 17, Toronto, Sri Lanka Guardian) The classical dance form of Bharata Natyam rooted from times immemorial in our culture is virtually the oldest dance form known today. It is a timeless legend that could be traced back to at least 4000 years but its origins and inspirations certainly go back to the beginnings of time.

The sages of the ancient eras conceived all movements in the dance and when it became evident to them that a celestial creator existed as lord of all creations, animate and inanimate, they saw him as the Cosmic Dancer. I firmly believe God in various forms manifests to mortals from time to time.

There is no doubt music and dance are the best elements of a Creator’s blessings for humanity. The uniqueness of Indian classical dances in particular is that they are spiritually inspired and most of them devotional in content.

Such dances portray the journey of the soul from mortality to immortality and the eventual union with the Creator. They constitute a heavenly birthright to which we are all as one human family entitled as a gift of grace and everlasting love.
