Confusing case of terrorists and militants

"Terrorism, in fact have come a full circle, or should I say has come home to roost. Wrong intentions have their just repercussions. We have struggled with terrorists for the past 20 years, with Europe soft peddling and catering to them in many ways. So the time has come to remind Europeans that these militant bombers are perhaps fighting for their self determination, keeping with the reasoning that they are not terrorists but militants and their human rights must not be lost sight of."

(March 06, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The bomb blast in Madrid roused strong feelings about terrorism in Europe on 2004. Overnight in the Boxing day the streets of Madrid were crammed with protesters. The bomb has instantly taken 200 lives. BBC as usual did not waste time, but got right down to brass tacks. Within minutes of the blast BBC was declaring that this was a terrorist act. A heinous deed perpetrated by murderous terrorists. In the days that followed BBC was full of concern and sympathy for the grieving European brothers.

Enter Blair the Prime Minister of UK. He was in a state of shock. The situation compelled him to moralize. His father, he said, fought the Nazis and he himself has lived with the Cold War. Now we are faced with a new kind of war, a war with cold-blooded terrorists who were bent on destroying "our" modern civilization. Their aim is to demolish "our" enlightened way of life. The free world was prepared to take on all terrorists wherever they are said Blair.

Good news for the people who were truly keen on eradicating the scourge of terrorism. But Blair and the European leaders were as usual guilty of double speak.

Sitting comfortably in my armchair and listening to this verbiage, I was tickled pink. To me, such hyperbole by the old colonial masters was like pouring water on a ducks back.

Over the years it has become agonizingly clear that there were two types of terrorists for the BBC, Blair and the European leaders. There were the terrorists who were targeting the white man’s civilized and enlightenment way of life. These were the bona fide terrorists as far as they are concerned. Then there were another type of terrorists such as those murdering the laid-back people of Sri Lanka. Hold on, hold on - those murdering the brown, backward people of Sri Lanka were not really terrorists, they were militants. A major discrepancy. Confusing yes, still nobody made clear what is the subtle difference between militants and terrorist as understood by BBC and the west.

Indeed according to BBC when a group murders Europeans, they are terrorists, when they murder innocent brown people of Sri Lanka, they are militants. So how is one to square this circle?

Indeed to seek an answer to this puzzling riddle we have to go back in history and investigate the great colonial adventure of the white man.

By the mid 1800s the enlightened English more or less began to oppose slave labour from Africa. There may have been a few genuine concerned individuals who opposed slavery. But on the whole this was not based upon purely altruistic considerations. It seems the British have found another source of labour in a nation they have colonized. Thus they were now in a position to outmaneuvre the other colonial powers by being in "enlightened" opposition to slavery. I am speaking of their access to Indian Tamil indentured labour. These semi-slaves were cheaper, more malleable, more docile and timid than those slaves brought over from Africa. Indeed up to that point of history most leading European nations were slave drivers including the English.

No wonder there were the terrorists and then there were the militants. So we discover that terrorists are those attacking the white man’s enlightened way of life. On the other hand, terrorists who were murdering Sri Lankans were militants as these were the earlier colonial helpers and are now fighting for their rights. Indeed murdering and massacring a few thousand Sinhalese can’t be defined as terrorism. They were purely militant acts.

UK, Norway and other neo-colonial forces are advising Sri Lankans how to conduct their affairs. Such as how to talk to the terrorists, how to negotiate with murderers and how to give consideration to the militants’ needs. And Sri Lanka, mind you, is a democracy.

In keeping with such enlightened principles the British High Commissioner in Colombo opened a TRO secretariat in Kilinochchi the other day. To the ignorant TRO is a terrorist (LTTE) run outfit, lying in the heartland of the terrorists. This gentleman should know that this group is proscribed under the Terrorism Act of 2000.

Indeed it is a well known fact that, the spokesmen for the LTTE terror organization are holding court openly in London. They routinely collect funds for a terror onslaught on a democratic nation. The authorities in many European countries have provided them with the necessary infrastructure to run their affairs comfortably.

If BBC must know, 200 people killed in the bomb blast in Madrid by the "militants" are peanuts compared to the 60,000 people murdered by and because of the terrorists in Sri Lanka!

Let me qualify the above statement. BBC’s friendly terrorists murdered 600 prisoners (surrendered policemen) who were under their protection; ethnically cleansed their area to make it an undiluted Tamil ghetto; assassinated a Prime Minister of India and a President of Sri Lanka; executed temple worshippers; bombed the Central Bank building thus killing hundreds. These are few obvious uncontestable facts in a long list of terrorist acts.

Under the circumstances, BBC/Blair moralizing sermons are a mockery. People here will take them with more than a pinch of salt. In fact European ravings about the Madrid bomb as the worst case of terrorism is nowhere near the facts except in their imagination.

Terrorism, in fact have come a full circle, or should I say has come home to roost. Wrong intentions have their just repercussions. We have struggled with terrorists for the past 20 years, with Europe soft peddling and catering to them in many ways. So the time has come to remind Europeans that these militant bombers are perhaps fighting for their self determination, keeping with the reasoning that they are not terrorists but militants and their human rights must not be lost sight of.

In effect, should we imitate Europeans and give them asylum and allow them to operate from our soil on humanitarian grounds? Sri Lankans should calmly consider the issues. Others misused and moralized to are sure to follow suit.

If BBC is what it claims to be, then it should know that their terrorism only just got off the crease. So that is good news for BBC for lots and lots of news business is on the way. Indeed they can make a killing.

No wonder the Sinhalese say every donkey has his day.
