LTTE fund raise for its de-proscription

(April 15, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) Sources close to the British Tamil Forum state that major fund raising drive is planned in the UK for a de-proscription LTTE. According to reliable sources the organisers wants to raise one million pounds for the effort. This new approach is taken to overcome the difficulties in raising funds for the military efforts of the LTTE in Sri Lanka.

It is learnt that the LTTE activists have been mobilised and a meeting had taken place in South London involving some senior activists of the LTTE.

According to the Terrorism Act the proscribed organisations can appeal against the government decision. The Act specifies the procedure to follow when appealing and the first step is said to be appealing to the Home Secretary.

It is unclear why £1 million is targeted when no efforts have been undertaken so far to challenge the proscription by submitting an appeal to the Home Secretary.

LTTE together with number of other with number of other international terrorist organisations were proscribed in the UK in early 2001.
