(June 25, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) 11 major associations of Rameswaram fishing community send their appeals in separate letters dated 23-06-2008 addressed to Manitham to intervene for protecting their fishing rights and for safe return of a school boy, Selvan. Joseph Bath (16) and his elder brother Selvan Ignatius (20) and three other fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy.

Their appeal asks Manitham to contact Central and State government to initiate action on Sri Lankan government. The excerpts in the appeal letter are:

Thiru. Arul Sagayam is a traditional fishermen and he is from fishing family. He owns a country boat, which has been given by Tamil Nadu government under Tapcopet scheme about 10 years ago. His son Joseph Bath, a XI standard student on school vacation came to his home and one day on fun sake, he joined with this brother, Ignatius for fishing. Later he was arrested by Sri Lankan Navy on suspicious and kept in Anuradhapuram prison. These innocent boys should be taken care before putting up false case and they should assure a safe return.

Thiru. Arul Sagayam’s boat bearing No: TN/10/MFB 704 should be returned by the Sri Lankan government. This boat is now in the custody of Sri Lankan Navy. Above boys were used this boat for sailing.

Sri Lankan Navy shot Thiru Santhiagu, a fisherman of Rameswaram was died on 02-06-2008. Usually, Tamil Nadu government gives Rs. 5 lakhs as compensation. But for this particular case, Rs. 1 lakh only has been sanctioned by the State government. It is urged to State to compensate Rs. 5 lakhs as usual.

Manitham Prays to Central and Tamil Nadu State governments:

Without any condition, the School boy Selvan Joseph Bath and other 4 fishermen should be released and should recover compensation from the Sri Lankan Government.

Without any condition, the boat belongs to Thiru. Arul Sagayam should be returned immediately. If any damage caused to the boat, it should be properly repaired before handing over to the owner. The repair cost should be borne by Sri Lankan government.

Indian government should ensure the rights and privileges of the Indian fishermen to carry on their normal occupation of fishing in the waters of Katchatheevu and it must be recognised and restored.

Considering the serious nature of the issue and the agony caused to the fishermen, the Indian government should tell its Sri Lankan counterpart in clear terms about the legitimate rights of India on the issue.

1974 and 1976 agreements, Karunanidhi said fishermen were allowed to dry their nets in Katchatheevu, but were prohibited from fishing in Sri Lankan Territorial waters around Katchatheevu following executive instructions, which cannot be supersede the provisions of the legally valid agreement entered by the two countries.

Tamil Nadu State government should pay the compensation as usual to the recent died fishermen of Rs. 5 lakhs. This should not be reduced for any reasons. This amount should be recovered through International Agencies from the neighboring Sri Lanka as penalty for their wrong shootings on our Indian fishermen.

Indian government should take very severe action against Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission, Chennai for their false denial of shooting every time on Indian fishermen.

Tamil Nadu fishermen are mostly CATHOLICS and LTTE supporters. They smuggle for decades.

Now the TIGERS pay hefty sums to the Indian fishermen through Catholic Church to smuggle for LTTE.

Karunanithi who is another LTTE supporter and helped the LTTE to kill the other Tamil groups such as EPRLF in cold blood!

His contacts with catholic Church is well known.

Now he want compensation from Sri lankans to the dead smugglers from Tamil nadu. This is a big fun!
