President’s Blunder

(August 25, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Addressing the Media today (25Aug), UNP M.P. Dayasiri Jayasekera asked, what law and order can be maintained in a country where the highest Executive, the President himself is blatantly violating the constitution and brazenly repudiating the solemn oath of this high office he made at the time of Presidential appointment to abide by the constitution?

The President’s attitude is not to promote and protect Democracy, law and order, but to safeguard lawless elements and spawn lawlessness which, in his case, unlike other Leaders of Sri Lanka are the best methods to achieve his barbaric ambitions which include winning elections.

An analysis of the elections in the recent past, the Sabaragamuwa, the NCP and the Eastern province clearly confirm his propensity, he added.

He is aware that if he implements the 17th amendment, he cannot abuse his Executive powers as he is doing now .Police stations can’t be made to act like his party offices. Alleged corruption charges against Ministers and Govt. officials and their tyranny cannot be given protection. The Public Treasury cannot be treated like his private funds, are some of the controls which would limit his powers. In other words, if the 17th amendment and the Constitutional Councils are implemented, the President has to act duly. Jungle laws cannot override the constitutional laws, he emphasized.
