Sanath Jayasuriya: Did he or did he not?

by Jacinta Cruz from Los Angeles in Toronto

(October 14, Los Angeles, Sri Lanka Guardian) Sri Lanka is playing some exhibition cricket in Canada. Sports should always be kept out of controversies. Sports is also an arena of opportunities to create better relations. It should never be politicised.

What were the demonstrators trying to communicate at a sports event?

This is Thanks Giving Weekend in Canada and everyone looks forward to this very special event away from the stress and strain of life.

Yet there are people who are up to no good. They live well and look well fed, prosperous and these are the very people involved in ensuring that their own hard hit folks are made proxies to be victims of terrorism in Sri Lanka. In their name they have collected millions and have manisons in Markham.

Have these people at any time protested against the evil fund collectors in the name of Tamil liberation? Have they demonstrated against drugs and violence on which some people of the community have enriched themselves?

Now somebody has caught Sanath Jayasuriya in the camera and making much mileage out of it. On the look of it, he could also be signalling a message like the ball has gone over the ropes. It could be any message, may be even he recognized an old friend and was calling "Adoy Machang!" May be he saw a relative of Russell Arnold, his former colleague and a Tamil. He has many relatives in Toronto.

Why denigrate a sports events with such stupid speculations?

As a matter of fact, even if he did show a finger at the demonstrators, it may be justified because the demonstrators had no business to make themselves a nuisance to the people who wanted to enjoy a cricket match.

But Sanath Jayasuriya is gentle, gentleman and who is Sri Lanka's pride and one of cricket's greats. We should be proud of him.. - Sri Lanka Guardian
