Army relaunches offensive against LTTE

(February 01,Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Sri Lankan Army has relaunched its offensive against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terrorists in the north.Fighting resumed after a 48-hour cease-fire called by the Lankan government ended late Saturday evening.

The military claimed on Saturday that it had destroyed an explosives-laden LTTE boat heading for an apparent suicide mission toward a naval blockade along the Mullaitivu coast, for a breakout bid by trapped LTTE cadres.

Troops have also seized a key luxury bunker, which could have been used by LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran. The army says the bunker is equipped with a lift, air conditioner and had bullet proof doors.

This is the third bunker unearthed by the Lankan troops during operations over the past few weeks. The forces are on the lookout to capture Prabhakaran and other top LTTE leaders.
