Debenham should apologise for the derogatory comments made on Sri Lankan soldiers.

This refers to HOWARD Debenham’s (Comment & Debate 16/3/2009-The AGE) article introducing himself as a former Australian HC in Sri Lanka during 1992-1994. I am not arguing various comments supposed to have made to him by two late Presidents JR Jayawardena and Premadasa as the veracity of them cannot be verified. However his letter is parroting nothing new but bits and pieces picked from LTTE based Tamil websites. I am quoting some unacceptable statements in his article that should not go unchallenged.

First and foremost, I must lodge my strong protest for the derogatory statement made by him on the patriotic Sri Lankan soldiers which reads “It is at least doubtful that the LTTE can be completely wiped out by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa's salaried soldiers, who are largely in it for the money they cannot earn at home” His insulting comments on our patriotic soldiers who are fighting to defeat the most brutal and deadliest terrorist outfit in the world to protect the territorial integrity for an undivided Sri Lanka is totally unaustralian and cannot be condoned at any cost.

The Australians respect, mourn and cherish even a single soldier dies in the war zones in Afghanistan and Iraq. Despite they are fighting in another country, Australia still treat them as patriots. But for Debenham, Sri Lankan soldiers who are ready to sacrifice their lives to protect the country from brutal terrorists are “salaried soldiers”. He should apologise un reservedly to the Sri Lankan public for this most insulting derogatory statement made on our soldiers. How will the Australians feel if I say that Australian soldiers are working for a salary and ceremonial status and have not joined the forces to defend the country?

Let me now challenge his unsubstantiated facts, inaccurate figures and discrepancies in his article.

He says “ in 1983, thousands of Tamils were slaughtered” The official figure that was killed not by Sinhalese people only but political goons belonged to all ethnic groups was only 471 in numbers.

He says that “the risk for those trapped in the north during the current Government offensive, the risk of accepting a "haven" on the Government side must be weighed against the risk of putting themselves in the hands of Government forces”. Well, if there is any risk, the ordinary Tamil civilians will not flee from LTTE captivity risking their lives knowing that LTTE has gunned down over 30 Tamil civilians while fleeing during the last few weeks.

“There is little hope of an enduring end to Sinhalese victimization of Sri Lanka's Tamils” Can he prove Sinhalese victimization of Tamils? This is the hackneyed theme by LTTE and Tamil Diaspora. Even former Attorney General of Sri Lanka Shivapasupathy who held one of the supreme positions says he was victimized (may be because he was made the AG of the country). If Sinhalese victimization of Tamils persists, then, Tamil moderates Like Anandasangaree and other Tamil political parties would have supported LTTE which is not. Government has already proved to the world how Pillayan and Karuna who were once terrorists were made a Chief Minister of the liberated Eastern Province and a non-cabinet Minister in the present government respectively. Is he oblivion to these stark truths or that he is ignorant of what’s happening in Sri Lanka?

For his information, Sri Lanka is not crushing Tamils but only Tamils terrorists. If the Tamils are crushed, how 50% of the Northern population now live in the South with Sinhalese, Muslims and other small minorities?

Quoting the recent LTTE suicide bomb attack in Akuressa, he seems to have condoned the act instead of condemning faithfully hoping that LTTE will continue to do so. Sri Lanka is well aware of that situation and ready to face any eventualities to crush even LTTE transforms into guerilla warfare.

Mr. Debenham, thank you for shedding crocodile tears for the future of Sri Lanka... The Sri Lankan Government is fed up of listening to peace vultures that come in various facets and finally decided that “enough is enough” and ventured into defeat LTTE menace once and for all from Sri Lankan soil and will do so.

We demand an unreserved apology from Debenham for insulting our patriotic soldiers.
